Years ago I used to always park the car in the garage every night. Nowadays I don't do it as much except in Winter. Would still always do it on cold nights or if it was raining and I was in the mood. Do many do it anymore? I suspect most garages nowadays have become storage rooms.

Not anymore as cars will give uneconomical to repair trouble long before they rust out is my experience the last few years.
However, I do keep the tractors and machinery in.

In Dublin no, there's bunk beds in there and it's rented out as close to the 14K rental cap as possible.

Probably make more just renting as a private parking space.

Since moving here the houses we rented have had garages and only 1 showed signs of use for a car. Rest were all storage/gym/washroom, the current one I am in had wood peat stored in there, having cleaned it all out, painted it and put car in there I was promptly told I had to reverse everything before moving out as landlord didn't like it.

None of family seem to use there's for cars either, either storage or workshops.

My Capri lives in mine and I have staunchly refused to allow it to become a store for household crap. I might be relinquishing part for use as a music studio though

Confused my wife by hiding her car in the garage the other week - it hasn't been in there the 5 years we've lived in this house.

She was on the point of calling the Gards to report it stolen. Hilarious! ( for me and the kids anyway)

Both family cars always parked in double garage. Automatic doors and direct access to house means we are always dry and warm. No cold starts or defrosting windscreen. Extra security.

I would if I had one. I don't understand why the majority of houses in Ireland don't have attached garages and when people build houses they build the garage away from the house. Carrying all the groceries, baby etc in the rain just doesn't make sense. I'm from Australia and the great majority of houses have attached garages. Makes more sense in Ireland than Australia to have attached garages.

A fella down my way has an attached garage, space to park in front of it and room for 2 cars at the other side of the house yet parks on the road and causes an inconvenience for everyone else around him. Garages in Ireland seem to be just somewhere to store stuff like a glorified shed.Maybe the extra few seconds it takes to open the door and get the car in or out are too precious to people.

How do you reverse that? Mess it up and strip the paint from the walls?!

For me, garage is for bikes, driveway for cars.

Double garage that we used to store both cars in until the dogs arrived. Now the old one lives outside and the dogs live there during the day. The new ones spends its time inside though along with all the junk, 4 bikes the beer fridge and the washing machine

How many houses in Ireland actually have garages?

I work that when I need to, most likely leave it looking tidy and argue stuff I got rid of was rotten anyway.

Guestimate would be very few % wise in cities but rural most seem to have garage/barn/outbuilding that can be classed as garage although most likely got dogs/tractors/mowers/washing machines in :D

The lack of garage use is probably down to the fact that most modern cars won't fit in garages from before the 90s and since then most houses don't have garages.

As said I can also never understand why people build a massive MacMansion and nearly as big MacGarage miles from each other.

My car will fit, however I wont be able to open the door enough to get out. Dublin garages are small as I reckon most were built in the 70's and 80's. You never see a new build with a garage any more.

I'm pretty sure it's very rare to have a garage in Dublin. Most new builds are shoe boxes that meet the minimum building requirements.

I'm always surprised when in the UK at how many houses have garages. Even new housing estates often have garages, which you never see here anymore.

They are pretty common in Dublin. Middle class housing built in the 1930s generally has it as people were moving to the outer suburbs at that stage. Some social housing built in the 1950s were built with social housing. Pretty much all 1960s generic Semi-Ds were built with garages in Dublin. It is not uncommon to see houses built before the car was common eg 1900s terraced houses with lanes at the back having garages. There are large suburbs of Dublin where pretty every house has a garage

They aren't common in new builds anymore. I can see why. They serve a very limited purpose IMO. I live in an area where every house has a garage and I say at most 5% of people store their cars in it. All the houses have a private driveway for a car, so the need for a garage is limited.

A garage is quite common in Dublin in housing outside of the canals and in between the M50. The only housing in that region that doesn't really have it is apartments (some actually do though) and social housing built in the 1970s on wards.

My house and a lot of the other houses in my estate had an integrated garage. The previous owners of my home and many of the other houses converted them into another room / bedroom... replacing the garage door with a window.

Irish garages / sheds tend to become another junk room. Lawnmowers, bikes, tools, paint cans, fuel for the fire.... rare to see a car in one!
