Octavias would be around that price too.

Also considered but Avensis seem more reliable and better value ?

If you're going Avensis, go for the 06 facelift.
6 speed box more durable as is the clutch, which gets really heavy on 5 speed, also less prone to injector faults. The 125bhp engine doesn't lose power with mileage like the 116bhp does.

They are few and far between in my budget though

Look at something else then. The 03-06 Avensis is a minefield.
406 would be worth a look maybe?

If an avensis is a minefield a 406 is a nuclear wasteland :p

    Thanks for helping anyway :)

So it seems octavia or avensis

At least the 406 would be comfortable.

Octavia really. It's hard to recommend a €1500 5 speed Avensis.

Non pd 110bhp tdi and an 05 number plate

    Or a clean non msport e46 320d

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-320cd-coupe-150bhp/14168969

Think this has 5 owners instead of 3 I remember posting it on the bangernomics thread

Would second the e46 320d. Bought one for same budget as you last summer and haven't had a bother.

I also got a BMW 320D four door, and it's been brilliant! €1400 was mine 2004 with 135000 miles

I'd say the engine in the Octavia is good, plenty of taxi drivers using them. Spec wise inside the Avensis is of a higher spec.

Had 406 and it was most reliable car I ever had. 2.0hdi is very good too.

The only thing is to get the one, that is not falling apart. With French of that age its aither a pure tank, that needs nothing, or a princess, that will even need to get panels replaced, because those got worn out somehow. :pac:

And I agree above. Comfort in 406 is just amazing.

At that price point, its hard to say anything is going to be reliable based on the reputation of the Brand/model/engine block. It'll all come down to recent maintenance and how many of the known issues for that model have been addressed.

It's a pity you missed out on the L&K Octavia in bangernomics last week.

No a minty Laurin & Klememt 110bhp TDI hatch with a huge file of receipts and history. Bought by another boardsie in the end.

K, elephant in the room here, but can op get insurance on a 10+ year old car , and if so at a reasonable price?

It might work out cheaper to get a newer car on cheaper insurance

    My current insurer will yes.

130bhp toledo showing as a one owner car on cars ireland looks super clean and supposedly 130k on the clock. test till july.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/vw-bora-sport-tdi/14497904
115bhp bora sport again showing as one owner on cars ireland and looks very clean. 159k on the clock. Service history and test till june.

110bhp non pd seat leon. 3 owners and a service history. 145k on the clock and supposedly the belt has been done. looks clean enough but no interior pics. test till 2018.

I would personally steer clear of passats and a4s as the suspension components are dearer to look after and they tend to be less reliable than octavias, boras, golfs, toledos, leons.

Out of the above examples the toledo would the the one I'd go for if there's any sort of a history with it and any sign of a recent belt change.

That Toledo fits the bill perfectly IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,302 ✭✭✭Supergurrier

Tidy example alright, found a passat 100bhp in galway with tax till nov test till dec i will check out first though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Pay as little as possible for a passat if ya can help it at all.
By in large they're sound cars and would fit the bill of a runabout perfectly but they are a hoor to sell especially the 100bhp ones.

Seems abit overly cheap for what it is, Is a nice 2.2 diesel mondeo st for sale in sligo for 1500 but no test so injectors must be gone (common failure)

Diesels are such a minefield at this pricerange i might just buy a 2.0t volvo s60 again but they are tragic on fuel for what they are
