Card details stolen

So recently my bank card details were stolen and almost 1000€ was charged on my card. Got that all sorted with the bank and was issued a new card.

I can only assume that my card details were stolen from online shopping etc as I rarely use ATM machines and it appears that the card was being charged in the UK.

Just wondering, what precautions I should be taking before using my card again online. I use verified by visa (but I'm not always prompted) I'm just worried that my laptop may have be hacked or there is some kind of malware on it. I use a mac and I have done a scan with Malwarebyte but it says my computer is clean.

Any advice would be appreciated :)

It could have been skimmed in a shop/restaurant. Solution - never let your card out of your sight.

Also, some POS terminals could have skimmers fitted to them without the shopkeeps knowing about it.

And of course the latest technology - contactless cards - is just a dream for the crooks.

Finally of course some online service may have been compromised and your card details stolen from them. Do you shop with any odd or small scale online service/supplier?

which bank are you with. odd they let a 1k transaction through.

banks here really need to have their apps notify if a payment is made using your card.

More than likely the site you were using was compromised and either POS malware was collecting credit card transactions or they were insecurely storing your credit card details.

The only thing you can do on your side is to be sure the site you're using is legitimate, this can be done by checking you're connection is secured by a HTTPS connection (prompted by the padlock in the top left of your browser beside the URL)

Click on that and click on details for the certificate. Here the certificate should be for the business you're accessing and also verified.
A company like paypal can offer some protection for you as a buyer and might be a good option for smaller online retailers.

If you also use your card in stores its possible the store was compromised, pretty common for this to happen with restaurant chains.

In fairness it was 3 separate transactions in one day and they emailed me with the unusual activity. One transaction was then able to be cancelled before it fully went through. But yeah having some kind of notification every time a transaction is made would be great.

I can't remember shopping online with any small retailers, usually Amazon or justeat, things like that. The only thing that I think could have happened was I was running a VPN when I made a payment. Normally I pretty careful and use a separate browser for a VPN but I realised I had hola downloaded on my laptop from sometime ago, though I never use it cause I heard it wasn't the safest.

I wasn't actually aware of that, so thats good to know. Generally I thought I was being very care buying online. Never buy from insecure sites. Basically I just want to ensure it is safe to use my card on my laptop again. Did a virus scan with another program, found one adware program on it but other than that everything seems pretty clean

Just to give you an idea - https://www.scmagazine.com/wendys-revises-data-breach-figures-over-1k-locations-compromised-by-pos-malware/article/529830/

Usually the big ones end up in the news but it happens to smaller chains/businesses too.

Same thing happened us not too long ago. Nearly €800 in charges to Uber taxis, Macys, Nike and Apple Store and other high street stores in the US. Our bank never even thought to find out how we were getting taxis to Canada and lifting €20 out of our local SuperValu at the same time :p
Still no idea to this day how it happened, as we are very careful.
