Tax question

    Hi everyone.

I'd like a little help with a few questions I have.

I bought a car a few days ago. and had the car parked in a county council car park today. When I got home I noticed that I had gotten a ticket for my tax being out (hasnt been taxed since august). It was left under my windscreen wiper.

Now my question is this, if I dont have my logbook yet, so I dont have my "title" yet, could I fight it on the basis that im waiting for it to come through to me, if that makes sense. I also thought that there was a grace period for your tax being out, so if that's true, wouldn't that apply to me if I just bought it? My insurance date displays that I'm only insured for the last couple of days on it.

I didn't know that was even possible to tax my car when I didn't have proof of ownership. I thought the tax office needed that. Stupid mistake, but I just feel annoyed that it happened. Was a genuine mistake.

There's no grace period. You can tax the car online before the logbook/title arrives.

    You can appeal

The car must be in your name to tax it but you don't need the log book to get it taxed.

Not if the vehicle is not in your name yet. Needs to be processed by Shannon. And sometimes there is a delay due to no fault of the new owner.

You can appeal. My experience with them is that they are alright. I had an appeal accepted before, slightly different circumstances, but I was not expecting it to be accepted and it was.

Make sure the car is taxed before you appeal obviously.

Once you tax it immediately after you get the cert and then send copy of this and cert showing that you had just purchased the car, there will be no issue in getting the ticket cancelled.

Change of ownership can be done in person /post at your local MTO.
Once done you can then tax it.

Why people send stuff to Shannon is beyond me

    It can't.

Why people can't check something before spouting misinformation is beyond me :)

Change of Ownership can only be done locally if the car is old enough to have the old Brown Log book.
What do you do yourself when you buy/sell a car ?

It changed many many years ago.

To completely reverse the question, how do I get the Gardai to put a ticket on a car with no tax or insurance. Have called them several times with no response.

Oh no, they do not like being told what to do.....;).

And it might (just might) be taxed and insured. Just no discs displayed :).

I have a van that sometimes is not used for a couple of weeks at a time. - I always take tax disc and insurance disc out as they were nicked by someone a few years ago.

Also gardai usually have more important issues to consider.

I've often handed in a change of ownership in the tax office and taxed on the spot.

People bring in VRC's to the MTO for vehicles which they have bought or sold every day of the week to effect a change of ownership
The change is made on the system and a new vrc is issued by Shannon in a few days.

Once ownership has changed, tax can be purchased by the new owner. The new owner does not need to be in possession of their new vrc.

People really need to stop misinforming others!

Are you saying that the Seller let you take away the VLC/VRC rather than send it off themselves ?

Still an offence not to display a tax disc, as the OP found out.

Some do! Rather foolish as the seller then phones the MTO saying they are getting speeding fines etc on cars they sold months earlier.
    Sometimes they know the buyer.

Alternatively, some sellers don't post of the VRC.
Best practice is to bring an addressed envelope with you when buying and walk with the seller to the nearest postbox.
That way, you both know it's posted.
If you post it with an RF100a and payment method to the MTO, it can be changed and taxed at the same time.

SHANNON will NOT tax a vehicle!

Pay more taxes, and allow your public reps to employ more Gardai.

They have better things to be doing/ going to

Call them and say I have left my car "make and model" parked "name the place" followed by.. "I am going on holidays for 2 weeks and I have no tax on it but it better be fking there when I get back", make sure to call them pigs or something too.

Might be even better if you say you're away to a water protest in Dublin or somewhere

Thanks for all the help everyone!

How do I go about appealing it? I looked on the ticket and couldn't find anything. Do I bring it into my council building or do I have to send it off somewhere?

Log book should be out to me this week so I'll have it taxed when I get it. Tried to do it online but had the message that I need to do it in person.

I can't see grounds for appeal.
The law is that a valid tax disc must be displayed if its on a public road. You didn't have one displayed.

Same thing happened to me about 5 years ago. I taxed the car then brought it into the council with the ticket and they sorted it out.
