What to do with my car - 07 Passat

    Guys,

Looking for a bit of advice on what to do. My car, 07 VW Passat, is banjaxed, broke down the other day and now needs to have the engine replaced. Basically there is a hole in the bottom of the engine and the crankshaft is wrecked. Knowing what I know about cars, that means very little to me but I know its not good.

I've gotten a few prices, averaging around the €2k mark for a 2nd hand engine and labour. So the car is 10 years old with about 280k miles on the clock. It had been running very well before this. Now I'm looking to see what my options are with it.

I had already been planning on changing this year anyway so this has pretty much made up my mind on that but trying to figure out what to do with my car. I've had a look around donedeal etc. and looks like €3-€4k is the most i would get for it if she was running properly. Would anyone know what I'd be likely to get for it as is? Trying to figure out if its worth spending the €2k to get a bit for it?

Any advice or ideas would be very much appreciated!

It's pretty much worthless as is.

I'd imagine you should be able to get an engine and have it fitted with new timing kit and water pump for closer to €1500.

Did you ring any breakers to price an engine?

I'd wonder if anyone would be achieving 3/4k for it tbh, if you put in the 2k you may only break even. Anything over 10 years now insurance will be going up too

Yea to be honest I just had a look there again and narrowed my search in a bit, looks a lot closer to €2k - €2.5k like for like.

Would you believe I am trying to sell an 06 comfortline belonging to my brother? He is in the middle east and its sitting outside his gaff in kildare.

    Advert is here.

Car is just sitting up. Any interest?

    VW BXE engine strikes again?

Some posters on here make out that if you change the shell bearings every third oil change it'll run forever and that there's no real issue....

You sure? It has rally spots to light up the night when beast mode is engaged. Which is ALL THE TIME by the way.
Don't confuse it with the 1.9. The 1.9L comfort is boring and lethargic. The 2L Sportsline has a beast under the bonnet. Sports arrangements, lowered suspension, front spots, leather sports steering wheel and bigger wheels with 140BHP, originally costing 40K

VWs aren't what they used to be.

    €4k for an 06 Passat ?????

Way way overpowered I mean overpriced.

    That's more like 08 money.

In terms of useful contributions for the OP... you may struggle to find a replacement engine. You are far from the first person to find their BXE engine punched a hole in itself.

You'll be trying for a while. €4k for an 06 Passat with no NCT or tax.

    Good luck with that..

    Yeah.

And as of yet it could be a bkc :)

OP I'd advise you to cut your losses. Advertise the car as not running/for parts only and see what you can get for it. yiu might be lucky and get €350 but I wouldn't hold my breath.

+1 for scrapping my 2l Passat engine went a few months ago and I dragged it to the scrap yard took the alloys off it and claimed the tax back
    Not worth the headache
To the guy selling the passat you might want to reconsider the price 3k for a car with no nct and a oil pump which is a time bomb

Price was dropped to 3k today. He got that price from looking online, but told him that was the ASKING price.

I brought it upto dublin today and might NCT and tax it and keep it. We shall see.

No VW engine on their list but do have a symbol there for them, only a phone call will find out.

IVI will supply and fit a BXE for around €2500 iirc.

BXE is directly interchangeable with BKC which is SLIGHTLY more reliable. You can buy one from a breaker for €700+ if you are lucky. You will still need to find somebody to fit it though and allow for a new t-belt and if you have any sense you should change the flywheel too.
    Best of luck.

With the best will in the world they are terrible pictures. Price is high also for what is a basic car.
