So I've a budget of about 5k for a second car. Went from a RAV4 to a focus but intend going back to a SUV type hacker.

My annual mikeage will be low, so am considering petrol(!)but I want the height of an SUV type. I Frequently carry boxes of stuff , and be nice to be able to shove in my bike at weekends with the seats down.

    Minded towards:
    Kia Sportage
    Toyota RAV4
    Hyundai Tucson
    Sangyong Kyron !
    Nisan Xtrail
    Mitsubishi Outlander
    Honda CRV

    Be circa 2005/2006
Don't want a landcruiser/ Sorrento or pathfinder size yoke.

    Any pointers/advice peeps?
Anything to avoid like the clap?

    Cheers

Of those a petrol RAV4 would be the best. They are 2.0 and 4WD as standard so aren't too light on fuel. That said you won't be driving much.

Honda CR-V worth a look too.

    Avoid the Kyron. They're junk.
Wouldnt bother with an outlander. Petrol is 2.4 far as I remember.

CRV. If I had to buy something like that in the morning on the cheap that's what I'd get.

Honda C-RV would be hard to beat. I had one for 6 years and the only trouble it gave was a blown light bulb. Bit thirsty alright but may suit your mileage. Very roomy and great reliability.

I'd look for my money back there!

I am considering the same at the moment...

Leaning towards Petrol CRV or Xtrail as both have timing chains. The others afik are all belts, a significant cost to replace. Had a mk1 CRV for 3 years, totally reliable, only needed tyres and service parts. However MPG was in the low to mid twenties. I am told the mk2 with the vtech engine is a bit better.

Anyone had a petrol XTrail? Whats the MPG like? Are tyres expensive?

The xtrails are cheap as chips
Is there an issue with them?

And when did they change the CRV shape?

Does the RAV4 petrol have a DMF?

I have the same concerns Re: the Xtrail.

CRV changed in 2002, with the new vtech engine.

+1 on the RAV. Had a D4D, absolute nightmare, EGR problems, injector problems, etc etc. All on a '04 with only 96k. Not as roomy as they look either

The OP would be looking at the new shape RAV4 with their budget.

Petrol RAV4 doesn't have a DMF far as I know.

    Aye. I'd a 2002 D4D
Wasn't much roomier than a starlet
I'd only two kids then tho!

Excuse my ignorance, what is a DMF?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Dual mass flywheel. Basically an expensive shock absorbing component of the clutch which can wear out.

    Thank god someone else asked!

    Thank god someone else asked!

90% of DMFs are on diesels. Some petrols have them, and they generally don't give as much trouble on petrol cars if they do have them.

I was mis-remembering one of of the many "my diesel RAV4 DMF is giving trouble ..." threads as being about a petrol one instead.

If you are thinking CRV I will make my usual recommendation - get the rear diff drained and filled with correct fresh Honda Dual Pump diff fluid. Simple job, fluid isn't mad expensive, and it should cure/prevent any odd noises from rear diff and keep the 4wd happy.

Yeah, forgot about this, I had that problem on my RAV D4d as well, serious clutch judder. Seems like mine had every common RAV D4d problem, glad to see the back of it.

It sounds like you don't need an actual awd/4wd just really an suv style vehicle.

A 2wd 1.5 daihatsu terios might suit you if the size isn't an issue, it'd be the cheapest to run and to my knowledge they're very reliable. I'd imagine it'd still fit bike in the back with the rear seats folded too.

This one looks nice although the price is strong.

its coming down to Rav4 V CRV, both circa 2007.
Have seen the CRV, body a small bit worn, but nothing i wont do to it in a couple of weeks, and top spec.

Any particular reason to avoid an automatic Rav like this one other than the high mileage? has good specs.

Lots of Luna Ravs in the Pale sub 5K, but its a basic spec, no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Luna is the standard model on them. There is a sol model too but they were way more expensive. I don't think I ever sold one but sold plenty Lunas.
The auto makes it very heavy on petrol. Unlesss you need the auto box, just keep looking for a manual. Now if you're only doing small miles then it might be just the ticket.
