Hi, Im looking at buying a petrol Honda Civic. I notice they changed from a 1.3 dsi engine to a vtec around 2009. Is this correct? Is the Dsi engine underpowered? Also is that the only engine change to look out for? Id rather the more powerful engine but it comes with an extra cost as they are also newer. Any advice. Thanks

The 1.8 petrol can be had, 390 tax post-09 or 10 and very economical too. Herself has one and it's averaging mid-40s to the gallon without being overly careful.

Just get a 1.8 on the new tax system. The 1.4 ivtec is better than the idsi but it's still slow. 1.8 is €390 tax on most 5dr specs from 2008.

Any opinion on this one? Says it has full service history. Very low milage.

That's bonkers money for it. I bought an 07 5 years ago for a few grand less than that. It's a 9 year old car. They hold their value and they're a nice car, but that's serious money.

There are dearer ones than that for less car. Especially from garages. Was thinking at least a grand of that price. Here are others around the same price. Cant find many with low milage for much less.

I've got 200kkm on mine, 120 of which I've put on, and it's still driving perfectly. Don't focus too much on tiny mileage ones.

Yeah sure one of them has 90000 km on it and its advertising for nearly 9000. Was yours a 1.8 petrol?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Yeah, there's a boardsie selling a 1.4 09 . I'll try and dig out who it is. Think they changed jobs and don't really drive now.

Edit: users name is billyhead. It's a black Si model as far as I remember.
Think he was asking €7500 for it before xmas,

I'm doing a voluntary early test on my 07 1.8 and it will be for sale shortly. Doesn't have the chape tax but the car would be around half the price of the ones linked above.

Can I report my own post for shilling?

I'm looking for something a bit newer. Have about 8000 to spend and want to get the most I can for that. Thanks though

Sorry to hi-jack this thread, going to view an 09 1.4 petrol civic early next week. Anything particular (outside of the usual) to look out for?

I'd love to buy the 1.8 model but my insurance would rocket.

Get some quotes, you might be surprised by how much they ask for between the 1.4 and 1.8. When I was looking at one, the difference between the two quotes was around 120 quids if memory serves... And the 1.8 is well worth the difference tbh.

is there any difference performance wise between the SE civic mentioned above and a Type S model or is the Type S model all just visual differences?

Great, thank you. I will give a ring just to see. I suppose I'd be conscious of fuel consumption on the 1.8 also. I'd be doing approx 350kms a week.

The 1.8 might actually consume less fuel in the real world than the 1.4 as it has to work a lot less to move the car around. Even if you have a heavy foot you should see at least 40 mpg from it. If you're careful, mid 40s, if it's a lot of start/stop traffic late 30s.

Yeah, my 1.8 is smashing mid 40's, mostly motorway mind you.

    I couldn't picture a 1.3 being as good.

    No.
They only differ visually. And quite important thing type S is a 3 door.

Just double check the tax by the reg number. They're not all on €390 tax.

    What would it depend on?
Was there any modification to 1.8 engine which reduced CO2 emissions at some stage?

No modification mechanically that I know of. Wheel size and 3 doors seem to affect it on some specs for whatever reason.

The 3dr 1.8 litre Type S is around €570 to tax.

My DSI gets around 40mpg in what I suppose is mixed driving, some motorway and mostly suburban Dublin. Rarely stuck in traffic to bring that down too much though.
