Hi lads, I'm looking at a few cars tomorrow because my 01 avensis is now effectively uninsurable. I'm looking at a 2007 1.4 golf with 82000 miles on the clock and 3 different 1.4 corollas, two hatches and a saloon. I'd appreciate and advice ye had to offer.

What do you want from a car?

Something that gets me too and from college and is insurable

    What's the budget?

Corolla would be the more reliable of those two, it would also be the more nippier. Corolla hatchbacks are also more sought after than the saloons. Golfs are more popular with young lads though.

    About 5000-5500

I'm 32 so I'm not sure how young that makes me. I'm leaning slightly more towards the golf as it has an extra year before the insureance company's write it off.

Hyundai i30/Kia ceed. You'll get a newer car for your money and they're very reliable.

Personally I'd just look for a different insurer.

Is this the first year you are insuring a car in your own name or something? A 32 year old with any half decent Ncb should be able to insure pretty much any car.

Unfortunately time is also an issue so hunting around for alternatives isn't really an option.

The best I can get is about a grand on a car worth maybe €800 at a push. I've 9 years no claims. I was with liberty with it being up for renewal at the end of September but I was heading away on Erasmus so when they offered me a renewal quote I thought I'd better call and tell them that it was going to be parked up and was told that they would be withdrawing the quote.

Not good so, if I was you I'd try every insurer realistically that quote should be closer to 500. Have you got quotes on any 07 golf or corolla's? The savings might not be that great

Find a good broker, you will get a more competitive quote. Not all companies are loading older cars.

If you just want a new car anyway then that is fair enough. I'd go for the corolla personally. I've driven both. The 1.4 golf is a pretty gutless car, it felt very underpowered. Corolla was significantly better but won't win too many races either.

Everyone I can find, most won't even quote.

I've tried 6 different brokers, one of them came back with quotes. Was quoted 870 before New Years but I ended up in hospital and when I got out it had been withdrawn because the car was now too old.

That says a lot about our insurance system... anyway, back on topic, Corolla is the way to go.

That surprises me. In that case I would say the corolla is better. I like golf's but that engine would put me off.
