Are you required to use a tee?

As it says in the title, when teeing off, is there a requirement to use a tee? Hitting off bare ground, I have more control on the ball and have less mi****s, whereas with a tee, I am getting under the ball a little too much, often leaving my shots short. I've adjusted tee height with the same result. Just wondering if…
