    Hi all,

I'm considering buying a used car that has Northern Irish plates but is in a dealership in Monaghan. Do I have to pay VRT on it?

short answer, yes. But it depends on some things, are you living in the Republic? The dealer may have brought it in with the plan on VRTing it for sale and hasn't put the plates on yet.

Most decent garages advertise the car to include VRT.

I am living in the republic, the car has been for sale for more than a month, so I'll likely call the dealer to see what the issue is for the VRT.

Then it will need to be registered here, best to call and clarify. Let us know out of curiosity.

Legit dealers pay the VRT and do the registration before handing over the vehicle.

VRT is nearly optional in border counties though :)

The VRT may well be paid by the dealer already and they are just displaying the old northern registration on it until someone down here buys it. The price they sell it for here should include VRT.

No, they don't, they need the new owners details to pay VRT and rereg, otherwise an extra owner appears on the VRC
    .

Wont it just be registered to a dealer in that case and no show additional owners. Its illegal for a dealer to sell a car it think on foreign plates.

I've bought UK imported cars in the past where the VRT was already paid by the dealer. They completed the process with my details when I bought it. Dealers (at least the bigger ones) must have some process in place with Revenue to pay the VRT upfront and then finalize the process with the new owner's details once the car is actually sold.

Dealers with a TAN do it online, all they need is the customers details.

You can change the owner details before it's taxed AFAIK. Strange move for a garage to do that unless they needed something to smoke around for a few weeks.

I assumed they had it payed in advance at time of arriving in the country as when I asked did I need to bring a utility bill and provide my PPS number when buying they said there was no need. Dealer is a large main dealer for that brand and the car was still wearing it's original UK plates.
