Change of ownership certificate document

    Hello everybody,

    Sorry long post.

I recently purchased my first car and was told to put my name, address and number down on a change of ownership form. They said they will post it out for me. I took a photograph and off I went.

I checked the website and it has a record of the change of ownership but the status is "vehicle registration awaiting issue"

I needed to purchase insurance and was quoted 9000 and 5400 and the lowest was 3456 Euro ...
My dad could get insurance with me as named driver for 1846. This was my best option so we purchased this. The only problem is that they require him to be the owner of the car .....

I now need to wait for the ownership certificate to be issued and posted to me and then I need to change the ownership of the car to my dad. This will take some time ...

Does anybody have any idea if there is a quicker way? Can I notify them directly to change ownership to my dad before they issue the certificate ?
How long does it take for them to issue this document to me? Does anybody have a quicker or better way? I want to start driving!

    Thank you!

What you did is known as fronting in insurance terms. You acquired cheaper insurance on the pretence of your dad being the owner and policyholder of the car. Insurance companies don't like that and that is why they will insist on your dad being the registered owner if he is to be the policyholder.

All that aside I'm afraid I don't think there is a quicker way of changing ownership until the new log book arrives and you change it over and send it off again. I'm afraid you will just have to be patient as it will take a few weeks to sort out.

You can bring the registration cert into your local motor tax office to change the ownership. It's done at the counter and a new certificate is posted out in about a week.there is no way to intervene in the process to change things or speed them up,

How will they see 2 changes by looking at the cert?

I never knew this was a problem. We explained it to the insurance agent on the phone and they said to just transfer the ownership to my dad and th policy will be valid. They made it sound simple and no problem.

Car is parked in secure parking and will not be driven until ownership has changed successfully and the policy is valid.

Does your dad already have an insurance policy? They're not using his no claims bonus are they?

No they were not allowed to use his no claims. With no claims the insurance would have been 1255 only

I just received the document ! I am filling it out with my dads details now and posting it so it is collected by morning post pick up.

As it has been filled out and posted then would it be alright to drive ? Or do I wait until he receives a physical copy?

The website will state a change of ownership is happening again.

I hope they don't flag this as the ownership changed so quickly ? Anybody have experience if this is allowed or will be flagged etc ?

Just be aware that if you ever make a claim you may have serious issues. If they find out that you are the main driver of the car they will more than likely cancel the policy and while they may pay out the claim, they will likely chase your dad for the money. Plus he will have a cancelled policy which would make it very difficult for him to get insurance in the future. This is something insurance companies are starting to really clamp down on.

But we fully explained the situation to the insurance sales person ... they said it is no problem. I don't understand...

Yeah.... get that in writing, as otherwise it's not worth jack.
