Moving to New Zealand on tomorrow for a year, have a job sorted on a dairy farm already, near a town called ashburton in the South Island. Just curious has anyone on here ever been there to work? And have any advise as to things to do/ not do. Going on my own, and don't know anyone out there so I'm a bit nervous about that. Going to play a bit of gaa if there's a club near enough.

Worked out their over 10 years ago, not far from Ashburton. An amazing place to farm in terms of scale and the quality of land in Canterbury i had a great experience. I haven't been back since so my info is a bit dated, i was there before the earthquakes in Christchurch.

I found the kiwis very friendly and my boss treated me like one of the family. the farm you go to will have a lot to do with how you get on, how did you find the farm you are going to?

I didn't play any GAA, Ashburton is probably over an hour from Christchurch and thats probably the nearest GAA club.
However there should be a lot of irish in Canterbury between students and lads working on silage crews also a few very successful Irish farmers in that region (well worth organizing a visit to those farms). Also you wont be far from the Lincoln demonstration farm, if there is open days when your there its worth going to see.

I worked 11days on 3 days off so i had time to travel around on my days off and see the south Island, it shouldn't be all about farming.

I found the job just on the fronterra jobs website. There is loads of work out there. I have just finished my ag science degree and Iv had loads of offers. Il be on a 6 on 2 off rota, which isn't bad.

Does anyone know what the story is with getting a car over there? I.e. Their equivalent of tax, insurance and nct?

Cars are good value. NZ equivalent of the NCT is a WOF and on older cars is done every 6 months.
Rego is Tax/3rd party insurance . If a car has a WOF and rego, you can give the man money and drive away
    Simples
Diesel is far cheaper but they have a thing called RUC which is diesel kilometres that you buy.

The donedeal site is called trademe.co.nz

    Enjoy

To be honest I'd head to Australia as well to see the dairy operations in Melbourne. (Echuca)Some of the most productive dairy country in the world with the scale being comparable to nz.
