Leap Card Questions

Herself is after moving to Dublin and we just want to double check how the Leapcard works. I assume student leap cards are different to standard adult and you state this when buying?

Also, it appears from reading the sticky your rate is capped daily/weekly rather than being discounted daily as such? So two journeys on Dublin Bus five days a week are capped at a weekly rate, correct?

When we looked at buying the leap card there seemed to be a suggestion that you bought the card but could pre load it with a bus pass too, which I thought was a bit confusing as it seems doubly discounted (leap card principal plus the bus pass principal).

    Appreciate the help!

    Thanks

Student leap cards are student travelcards AFAIK so you'll need to get one of those and then the daily/weekly caps are different.

Aside from the caps, fares on Dublin Bus and Luas are discounted for leap users anyway so you'll save even just using it once a day.

You can buy things like 30 days bus tickets, which may work out cheaper than using the daily/weekly caps. You'll have to do your homework there depending on how often you'll be travelling.

    Adult cards cost €5 btw.

Don't really understand your question about weekly rate so I'll leave that to someone else!

You can have cash (e-purse) on a Leap card as well as a bus pass, this gives rise to the question as to which to use and when and how does the system know which one to use if you use the validator on the right i.e. bypass the driver.

If the pass covers a calendar period like a month or a year, you always validate it on the right as effectively each journey is 'free' so there's no need to deal with the driver.

If it's a 30 day pass and you validate on the right, it will deduct one day off the pass if that's the first time it was used that day, all subsequent journeys on that day are 'free' so you continue to validate on the right. However there are times when you might want to use the cash instead, for example if you are only making one journey on that day and you don't want to expend one of the (non-consecutive) 30 days from the pass on that single trip. In that case, you go to the driver, declare your destination or fare and say that you want it deducted as a cash fare.
