Hi everyone , I'm new here and I am hoping for some advice.
I was laid off a month ago and I went to my local social welfare office to sign on for JSB but apparently I had not paid enough contributions after two years of working which I didn't argue I don't know how that is calculated so I signed on for JSA instead I left all my forms in minus a p45 which I had to wait another week for but I did drop it in a.s.a.p.
I was given a waiting time of one month which I could do because I was saving for a car but food and a house suddenly became more important.
So yesterday it was exactly one month and I hadn't heard anything so as I was passing I said I'd go in to enquire, I was then told we closed your claim because you never dropped in a p45 well that's not right because I definitely did. I was annoyed but I was polite and I filled out all the forms again and dropped in all forms again within the hour which I was then tolf it would be an eight week turnaround due to a backlog. I decided I would visit community welfare and I was treated like a piece of dirt and given no assistance whatsoever , I am so angry and annoyed that I will now be without any money at all. So what do I do now I have rent and bills and maintenance to pay which I simply cannot do. I have asked family for help but they are not any better off than. I am so I really don't know what to do .

I thought that too , it's a bit of a crappy system I was told I can appeal and I did but I assume I'll be waiting awhile

Yes you can be left with nothing.

A friend of ours worked for thirty years straight, was let go beginning December. Company folded, no money to pay redundancy, has to go through DSP. Takes ages.

In the meantime she went to the Intreo. Nothing, nada, nothing. Why? Because she is compliant enough to return a bit of self employed income on one night a week that gives her about 30 quid net for the night. Otherwise available for work Mon-Friday obv as she is now unemployed.

NO, you are not entitled to JSB because you are self employed. No arguments.

    WTF?

No referral to CWO either. Asked what to do and was given JSA application but is not happy that JSB will not be paid based on 30 years full Class A PRSI contributions.

Seems to me that if you work nixers and don't declare it you are fine for JSB, but even a piddling amount declared and returned to Revenue are you are funked.

So the lesson is, go on the black, because you are entitled to nothing otherwise. Lesson learned.

I do realise that a Full Time Self Employed person pays a different class of PRSI and is not entitled to anything, but our friend was full time EMPLOYEE for thirty years paying full PRSI.

Nothing. It is kind of outrageous isn't it?

You would be entitled to a supplementary welfare allowance ,
What exactly did the cwo say and why

yes, you need to appeal the decision asap.

dont take no for an answer. be polite but firm and tell them you need help, and your family cannot/will not bail you out and you have no other source of income. Also call SVP if you have a bill you cannot manage or your short on food.

They dont judge, and they will help out if they can. I know its hard taking a step like that, but you can balance the scales later when your back on your feet.

Re maintenance ; if its court ordered you need to apply to have the maintenance order varied & you need to apply asap.

Im sorry to say re dole application you could hva ebeen more proactive. Im not criticising just hope that the lesson is absorbed. drop back in once a week when your waiting on your decision and ask if there's any news on your claim.

Sickening , I should mention the c.w.o in our area is notorious for picking on men who she deems dead beat father's so to speak , now i don't live with my daughter but I contribute and I see her whenever I get the time , I have a great relationship with her mother but apparently because we live apart I am a waster.

appeal it and ask them an actual reason why you cant get a supplementary payment while you wait for your JSA to come through??

Go to Citizens Information - they are absolutely brilliant and will help you with any of this. In fact I'd go to them first, they might know why you were turned down for supplementary payments. Do it and good luck :-)

Lesson is not to declare yourself as having non PAYE income whilst you are an employee.

It is that simple. That is where they are taking us now.

CWO and DSP have a lot of power. I think you have to stand your ground and politely tell them to Foxtrot Oscar, no need to judge anybody, just their circumstances.

Friend will be contacting Leo Varadker and Citizens Info about this. She has enough to keep her going for a few weeks, but was offered NOTHING, for a non PAYE income of 30 quid a week and 30 years of full stamps. WTF?

p,.s. and call into them Every Single Day..... hound and harass them about this. You need to be very proactive and say you simply have no other money at all. If they need forms get them, if stuff needs to be signed do it. Getting benefits and payments is not easy and you have to do all the running yourself. Guess that's how it should be though :-)

What was their reason for not giving you Supplementary Welfare Allowance. Do you live with someone else?

I know the feeling my friend, you are not alone. Listen, your daughter will not always be a child and will know the help and sacrifice you made for her when she grows up. The law is against men like you and i, we are not a fashionable enough cause to fight for. I wish you well, genuinley

Sorry I haven't replied to everyone , as it stands right now I am still receiving nothing from DSP or C.W.O I am relying on hand outs from people. I am taking it further but it's a slow process I actually hoped I would be back in work already but it's apparently not that easy to get work who knew ?? . I appreciate everyone taking the time to reply to me though. If any one knows of any employment opportunities let me know , I'm joking kind of.

I have my daughter 3 days a week , other than that does my cat count ?. I live alone and I wasn't given a definitive answer on why they won't pay me I'm over and back to the office everyday trying to get answers , I could nearly make a career out of it at this stage.

That's unbelievable. I honestly don't think they can leave you without any money if you've no-one else to support you. Would you consider going back to the SWO and not leaving until they help you. I mean what do they expect people to do? Starve?

Also I know it's not easy but think about going to your local St.Vincents De Paul, they're specifically there for occasions like this.

Hi this is terrible how do they think your going to feed your child for the three days that she is with you , look go to doctor tell them you can't handle this and get them to write a letter it might help , as someone else said ask st Vdp there really is no shame doing this , they might be able to give something until you get it sorted

I have been to the office everyday for the last few weeks , I'm hoping they will eventually just give in but it hasn't worked so far .

Any local TD who might help? I find Sinn Fein counsellors very helpful in this regard.

Just go over and say that you would like the refusal in writing. You can't appeal a desicion unless you have a written refusal. Get the name of whoever you ask for the written refusal
When the refusal arrives go to your CIC and ask them to help you Appeal. In the meantime you should ask the St Vincent DePaul for help as continually calling and waiting for the Dept to "give in" won't work, that's not how they operate.

Did CWO recommend that you apply for a different benefit or refuse outright?

Are there any jobs available locally?

Do you receive and other DSP benefits or rent supplement?

I have talked to a sinn fein TD who by chance lives two doors down from me , the words chocolate and teapot come to mind after our conversation.

I suggested Citizens information weeks ago OP . I've worked there . This is what they do . It would have been sorted by now , I've done this so many times for people .

You haven't said why exactly they won't give you JSB or JSA .
There is a reason .....why aren't you asking them or telling us here what they say ?

Something not adding up here ?

Something def not adding up. Every citizen in the state is guaranteed to a basic minimum income.

Yes but obviously that citizen has to meet the conditions and obligations attached to the payment.
There must be conditions and obligations attached or we would end up having to give Michael O'Leary and Ben Dunne SW payments.

Hello everyone , I have taken advice given to me and I have got some good news. I went into the main control office today. I was talking to a very helpful man there who was appalled at how I have been treated , I was told by him that I had two payments sent to the wrong post office that I never collected , so thats my fault ? They also have the wrong address for me , I haven't signed on since I claimed ? I wasn't told a date to sign on . There is good news I won't get my hopes up just yet but he says I will be paid and backdated on Thursday .
