As a long time lurker on the bangernomics/luxobarge threads, I'm still amazed at the quality of car that can be picked up for a song these days, due mainly to the exhorbitant cost of fuel, tax and insurance. But with all of that put aside, I'd like to hear what ye think is the 'best' engine that can be got for that sort of money at the moment? Not even talking about the best car overall, as that's even more broad and subjective. My own nomination would be a 6 cylinder BMW petrol of the e39/e46 era

    LS400

I'm a big fan of the 6A12 MIVEC V6 engine in the FTO. It's not the most tuneable engine or anything, just a very charismatic unit with a nice sound and split personality.

As per colm - the 1uz Toyota/lexus v8. Beasht of an engine, add some itb's and you have a screaming roaring monster made of power, smoothness and reliability.

V8 in the S type worth a mention

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    Any V8 :p

If you don't mind the €1809 motor tax...

You could pick up an E38 BMW 7 series with the M60 / M62 V8 petrol engine for around a grand in some cases. Some car it is. Not just for floating about like most other V8 engined cars. And BMW has won more engine prices than any other manufacturer, mostly for their straight 6 and vee 8 engines.
