    A budget of 7.5k isn't too shabby.

So maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't touch that car based on the dashboard alone. Looks like the most depressing place you could ever spend your time.

Don't get me wrong, to each their own, but there's no way could I spend that kinda money and be happy sitting looking at that soviet russian looking bland-as-bland-can-be dashboard.

That said, your thread is specifically about the fabia, so you've obviously already decided on that make/model?

Assuming you haven't, here are some alternatives that I personally would consider:

If you could add a little to your budget and wanted to get a bit more style (exterior, anyway):
    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/late-2013-volkswagen-polo-1-2-tdi-match-edition/14140284

If you wanted to get a bigger motor:
    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/vauxhall-astra-1-3-diesel/14404191

Small city car with a (in my opinion) much more bearable, modern interior:

Also nicer than the Fabia in my opinion, but critics give them a hard time for being not so nice to drive and powerless:

Looks a bit cheap for its age to me. That would get me suspicious.

The price is about right to me. You can buy a brand new base petrol model Fabia for €14500 these days before any dealer discount. That exact car is 3 years old, it's the old model and has above average mileage for a 3 year old small petrol car.

Isn't it the same engine that's been in the Polo since 2002?

    Yep. HTP

News to me,where did u get that fact

My sister had a 03 ( I think) and the timing chain started went, she was advised a replacement engine would be cheaper than a rebuild. She got a replacement engine and inside 3 months the timing chain went in that also.

Fast forward a few years and my partner drives a 141 1.2 petrol Seat Toledo (same engine as in skoda, VW, seat) just before Christmas the timing chain started making noise in that also. Timing chain including pulleys etc were changed under warranty ( thankfully as there were only a couple of months left)

The 1.2 in a 141 Toledo is a TSI which is a different engine to the Fabia and Polo.

Volkswagen aren't great with chains and that 1.2 engine would be doing well if it lasted long enough for the chain to go.

They reverted back to a timing belt on that 1.2 TSi engine a few years back due to the previous timing chain issues. Not sure what year it was but it's worth checking into.

1.2 tsi is 4 cylinder though. The car the Op is looking at would be the old 3 cylinder from the old polo.

I couldn't open the link in the OP so not sure of the year Fabia in question, the timing chain problem is worth considering Imo seeing as it seems to be an issue in a good few petrol vw spanning a few decades. Would certainly put me off buying another

Oh right so that Fabia doesn't even have the TSi engine? Jasus!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,316 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Even a polo wouldn't have had the tsi as standard. The Audi A1 is the only one in that family that would.

They have the TSI but most just opt for the bog standard 1.2 as it's cheap

    Hi,
I had a 03 HTP Fabia from new. Had to let it go last year as the timing chain was rattling and with 130k miles on the clock was told that it was cheaper to scrap or get rid as a fixerupper.
Otherwise it gave very little trouble throughout the years except the last year or so when I guess it was dying a death by 1,000 cuts.
    Was always serviced regularly mind.

Skoda areaways a reliable manufacturer so in your case the Fabia would be a great choice but I would consider looking at the Ford Fiesta.

Buy a Fiesta it'll be more reliable and it's a much nicer car

Can't say I'd agree with that. Apart from the bit about looking at a fiesta.

I'll be buying petrol when I buy and was thinking of a Passat or an Octavia. Are we saying all VW petrol engines aren't great? I haven't a clue about these things. Also like the look of some Kia's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,642 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

An Octavia is smaller than a Passat and has some different engines to the Passat due to the difference in size and weight. For example the Octavia comes with a 1.0 litre and 1.2 litre turbo petrol engine while the Passat comes with a 1.4 litre turbo petrol engine.
