Second hand estate options

The Guvnor

Looking at a new to me car.
Settled on an estate.
I've looked at quite a few.
Ideal age 3-4 years so 2013-2014 will do me.

Budget ideally sub €20,000 all in.
Mileage ideally sub 60,000 miles
Refinements ideally leather, electric seats, memory a plus.
Manual is fine.

Most likely I will be importing the car and whilst I'd like certain models - I can't justify to myself the VRT I'll have to pay so now want to ensure the Co2 figure is 140 or less.

I'll be moving from a 2006 Touareg with €1600 a year road tax so something with 120 Co2 and €200 would do me.


Cars I've looked at:

Audi A6 Avant
Audi A4 Avant

BMW 5 series E60 usually and 520 or 530

Skoda Superb

Mazda 6

Volvo V70

MB E Class 250 or 350

VW Passat 2

Toyota Avensis

I've pretty much ruled out:
Audi
BMW
MB

Reasons spec levels are not great on most tbh, part electric seats, high vrt usually.

Mazda read bad stuff online so no dice there I reckon.

VW seem better than the Skoda - value wise but not spec wise. However the skoda's seem a bit expensive and the co2 are highish on the superb due to size.

Leaning now toward a toyota avensis icon 2.0 d4d - all the extras I'd like and 120 co2 and low vrt and tax.

Is there an obvious make/model I've overlooked?

Of those listed, the Merc E-Class. Hard-headed logic would dictate the Skoda Superb, but sod that! :pac:

I will look at the Mondeo. i40 also.

I drove a superb and was not overly impressed tbh it's not bad but for the £12-14k I'd spend in the UK you are in MB territory.

MB's - spec - does my head in - part electric - part leather etc.

I'd love an E350 estate or 535D but the road tax here is as we know shocking - any car is a bonus after the Touareg though so I may go in convinced on a 2 litre 120 co2 car and leave with something very different...trying to be sensible here! LoL

Surely if an i40 is in the mix it should be going up against the octavia rather than the superb.

Mondeo is great car.

Why E61? Isn't an F11 in budget. I have an F11 now. Had a Mondeo before it.

Superb looks nice. E class aren't that efficient until fairly recently. But I loved the one I had. Prefer the interior to bmw. Seats are bigger some people love them my brother hated them .

What about a civic tourer? Too small? Actually a decent boot in them.

Thanks Bazz - Jags are lovely but the old reliability chestnut pops up here for me.

V40 would be too small for my needs - ideally V70.

I've a T'reg and Passat so looking to get similar but newer with less road tax and more mpg.

My sensible head would say no CJ - just down to the car not being common - parts possibly hard to source etc.

You're spot on but in Skoda the only one I'd consider is the Superb - don't ask me why as I can't really answer that tbh bar I do like the memory function on the elegance.

Co2's are generally high on Skoda seems like they are an engine behind the VW/Audi Marques in this regard.

Mondeo looks great from what I've see tbh.

With the higher spec I'd like and moderate mileage it's unlikely I'd see many F's most in the range were 2010-2011 and all were E61's.

I do have the possibility of a nice low mileage E60 Saloon 530D M-Sport if a friend in the north wishes to sell it - he does also have a new M4 so 530 does not get driven much - it's 2011 with 30k or thereabouts as he always had 2 cars.:eek: Joys of the north/uk.

Mercs its the spec and efficiency - I'd be in the 570/750 a year road tax bracket and after the Touareg I'd fancy getting away with less like 390 max (140Co2).

Superbs to me were disappointing tbh - plus the efficiency is also an issue.

Civic never looked at it but would imagine the tourer is rare?

I've looked at a few and they seem ok, only.
Just their rarity - ish would niggle away at me and I'm not sure how reliable they are atm as I've never really paid attention to volvo's generally.

A T5 however would be just the ticket...:D

The problem with the Volvo v70 is that they are rather dated looking these days, if that doesn't bother you then they should be a contender. D5 5 cylinder engine is the best diesel option in them.

If reliability is your main priority then maybe look at the Honda Accord Touring:

If you can wait it out for a Mondeo Titanium X estate, do - the extras and leather seats are worth it. I'm finding used cars to be quite thin on the ground at the moment especially for the specs/models I've been looking for.

Superb Mk2 Hatchback looks awkward, unproportional, ugly. Estate is much better, as the short wheelbase is much better masked.

The thing is - you see own car 99% of the time from inside. If it delivered on comfort, practicability, reliability and efficency, I could drive a horse-face, AKA Ssanyong Rodius.

True but I do 40k+ miles per year and couldn't face it if I didn't at least 'like' the car I was getting into and out of. After two years in my current steed I still look out the window at it now and then.

Have driven A6 Avant (2012) and Mazda 6.

A6 would be my choice.

Agreed, one must like the car. It is a sophisticated form of torture to drive a car you don't like.

How about the Peugeot 508. Looked at one recently & liked it. Plenty of room for the taller driver but very little storage/cubbys for all the bits you carry around & don't need !!.

Thanks Mc - that's the one I'd go for and I'd be looking north or UK.
I like the 161-163 manual which I think is a 120g Co2 car which is great.
Seen heated and cooled seats - full electric, some with memory and some with pan roofs as well plus with a tint on the rear they look great as well.

Cheers Tiger - don't know - French cars was never even an option for me. I did however drive a Master Van recently and it was great and it had just a 1.6 litre engine which surprised me.

Audi A6 is the nicest looking of that list.

You also need to consider resale value when you go to sell it, so factor depreciation into any costs.

Skoda Superb is the safest overall purchase there in terms of running costs and depreciation. Not the worst place to sit for a couple of years either. Look for the Laurin & Klement (L&K) option pack as well as they were popular enough on UK cars.

I felt that way for many years re French cars. Some of them aren't that bad & because of their bad rep, they can often be got at a good price. I've been driving a Citroen C-Crosser(basically a re-badged Mitsubishi Outlander) for the past 5 & half years & have had no issues except the dreaded DPF just before Christmas but that happens to most modern cars now. Had a C5 before that which was fairly OK as well. Occasional errors that turning off engine & back on cleared (French electronics). Bought both fairly cheap. Tax on C-Crosser is high though.

The depreciation is a big thing - I'd be looking to buy the car at about 50% of what the original price was therefore avoiding the brunt of the slide.

Skoda's are still on the list - L&K definitely the one to go for and if feasible their Keyless entry system - KESSY.

I'll have a browse - most of the french marques plummet like a rock in the first 2-3 years so good value definitely to be had and the Master Van I drove was surprisingly nice - Kangoo was sh1t on the other hand in terms of comfort!:D

A nice car - I'd be wanting it with full leather and electric front seats - would kind of limit my options a lot.

Having said that more bhp is always a positive with me.:D

Maybe there is a version of that jtdm I don't know of but I thought it had neither. 570 tax and 9.5s for 0-60.
