can anyone tell me what the different LED's mean on the dash for the warning lights?

Haven't been able to find the answer in the Hayne's manual.

specifically the bottom row. the top four have symbols but the bottom four don't.

sorry for being so bad at explaining myself

I'm assuming the dash is the same as the one below. If it is, then the bottom row (and the centre one on the top row) are simply blanks - there are no LEDs in those positions - if there were then they'd have symbols like the four that do. They are possibly used in other variants depending on the vehicle specification.

If your instrument panel is different* to the one below then post a photo so we can have a look at it.

Thanks for the reply, only seeing this now.
    That's the one!
The bottom left used to come on when I first turned the key until (very limited knowledge) the glow plugs (it's a diesel) had warmed up and I could start the engine. If that helps at all? If it was a blank and came on for no reason I don't know if that would make me feel more easy about it or not!

You are correct - bottom left is for glow plugs. It's a yellow light. The pic I posted is an instrument panel for a petrol engined MkII.

The cars going to the garage tomorrow for a service so I'll know some time this week anyway, I'm going to assume that maybe a glow plug has gone and that's the the light won't go off anymore.

    Thanks for the explanation

It's so long since I worked on MkII Golfs that I can't really remember. I know that the glow plug light came on with later models to indicate a fault but the system was basic enough back in MkII days with little or no self diagnosis.

You could be right about a glow plug gone but I doubt it (from memory). I'd be more inclined to suspect the glow plug relay and/or the temp sensor.

Don't take my word for it - it's been too long. Let me know how you get on.

Is your MkII in daily service? Any chance of posting a pic?

    That takes me back..

Glow plug relays used to die in them. Nearly all mine had a slave solenoid and a button put in them for the glow plugs

Id like to see a pic if you have one as well

That's the only picture I have of it at the moment I'm afraid!

    An update!

Turns out it was the glow plug relay like was said above! He also did a general service, timing belt and the clutch so even though it was a bit more expensive than I expected I'm a happy camper!

    Thanks for the help!
