I get a rumbling/knocking noise coming from the under-carriage of the car when driving over rough surfaces.

Its recently past the nct ..so i presume its not the shocks?

    any suggestions?

Could be just about anything. Do you have stand to put car up and check?
And as always when posting in a motors forum - what car is it?

    Anti roll bar bushes
    Anti roll bar links
    Rattling brake calipers.

Could be any of the above but I'd plump for roll bar bushes first. They may have passed NCT inspection but they don't have to be that worn to rumble on rough surfaces.

If it's a proper audible knocking I'd be betting Drop Links, had a bad knocking from my car and it was a drop link sheared off.

As said it can be a number of things. But passing the nct doesn't rule out anything they checked either.

Are you going to fix it yourself OP? Do you have the stands and tools you need?

Yes, and in a lot of cases the front subframe has to be removed to do the fronts. The parts are cheap enough but the labour is what you will pay most for.

    ^^^^^^^^^

    how much in general?

is it a job you're average joe could do?

For front and back bushings, I'd say somewhere in the €150 range. It's not something I'd recommend to try, the back side is usually easier as access isn't as restricted but the front usually has the sub frame in the way making it difficult to back off bolts on the anti roll bar.
I can tell you once you replace them it's like a new car.
