Discontinued NSA Filter

A friend just moved into a new house and there is an NSA filter under her sink. Now the water seems fine from it but according to images on the web this model has been discontinued and we don't know how long it has been there for.

Is it ok to drink the water from this or should it be disconnected immediately?

I attach a picture of the unit.

Not that hard to find http://www.ebay.ie/itm/BRAND-NEW-BOXED-NSA-100S-Under-Sink-Bacteriostatic-Water-Treatment-Filter-Unit-/252717185166

You could just as easily replace it with a unit that takes replaceable cartridges.

If you don't want to use it I'm sure there will be a stop valve to facilitate cartridge replacement which can be turned off.

Really depends on how bad your water is if you replace it or remove it?

Thank you for the reply. We think we will just disconnect it.

As you dont know the history of the filter and the water I would recommend that you dont consume ant water from the filter and get a water test carried out on the incoming non filtered water. this will let you know if and what type of filters you need.

Wouldn't the test cost more than just changing the filter yourself?

Yes a test could cost more than putting some filters.
But without testing the water how do you know what is in the water that needs to be filtered out?
You could install a similar filter and hope it is suitable but never actually know if it is removing everything that needs to be filtered out.
You could also be spending money now and in the future replacing filters that you may not need.

The original filter could have been fitted after a great pitch from a sales man, the plumber could have had one in his van he wanted to off load or the water may have been tested and a suitable fitted years ago (no guarantee the water quality is the same now though)
    None of us actually know.

At the end of the day this is water you will be consuming is it worth taking a chance on it
