Underfloor Heating & Rad Combo

    Hi all
We are doing a large renovation with a 40m2 extension. This amounts to 185m2 approx.

Our plan is use underfloor heating for the new area and rads in the old area. In short, 74m2 of the house will be heated using underfloor and 111m2 will be heated using radiators.

Is there any experience out there regarding the option of using 2 types of heating in a house in the way as described above?

Thanks in advance for all thoughts and inputs.

    Daragh

    Hahaha..you will curse yourself !
Been there myself..very nice and warm in half of the house, chili cold freezing in the other half ! iuess which half !?
Radiators working fine but heat is not going under. The heat at the feet feels better than heat at the head level.

My friendly advice: get UFH everywhere or nowhere !

    Same as post #2!

I have a very old house, but had to rebuild the return (kitchen and bathroom above). I put ufh in the kitchen (which is pretty small) and it's connected to the gas central heating, so effectively is just another radiator.

It's bloody brilliant, but just emphasises how draughty the old rooms are with bare floorboards and single-glazed windows

I'm sometimes almost tempted to pull up the original floorboard so I can have ufh all over!

In practical terms, it's no bother - I just have a switch near the boiler that turns the ufh on or off - I don't have control of the temperature.

there is no reason why you cant put in UFH and rads PROVIDED the system is designed and installed correctly.
    this means taking into account
the heat source to be used
the different running temperatures of both systems
PROPER heat calculations (not close enough or there abouts)
    NO long underfloor loops
    the controls to be used
and how the 2 systems work and will be used (UFH isnt suited to intermittent heating) and the different heat both systems provide UFH provides less intensive, more even/consistent heat in the whole room where rads provide more heat the nearer to the rad you and these differences can give the feeling that one system isnt working as well as the other

The problem is the design and installation often isnt carried out to the level it needs to be and corners can be cut with these and/or building standards causing issues with the end product

We'll mention some of your thoughts to the plumber TPM. Cheers.

I think some of you cannot understand the proper "feedback" that your feet will give you from walking over a nice and warm surface AGAINST a cold one.
On my ufh and wooden floors,at the joining of the rooms / doors,i didnt insert too much pipe .Coming from one room in to another AND walking over that less than 20cm linears will trigger strange reactions from brain via foot !

    Either way...hve fun !
