2017 Ireland and Northern Ireland airshow dates

    Foynes Airshow - Saturday 22nd July 2017

    Bray Air Display - Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd July 2017

Newcastle B/E Aerospace Festival of Flight - TBA

    Airwaves Portrush - Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd September 2017

Some massive news to kick off this topic, Bray & Foynes have joined together, and all displays invited to Bray will also be invited to Foynes. The new brand at Foynes will be known as 'Aviation Ireland'

Newcastle is still TBA. There is a date in place just not officially confirmed in public. I expect this to be made known soon after the Newcastle chamber of commerce meet to discuss town events in 2017 - usually middle to end of Jan.

All other dates are confirmed it seems.

A great idea but a rather limp name, it really doesn't express anything about the event. Sounds more like an ehthusiast's blog. Why not 'Airshow Ireland'?

Discussions about the Newcastle show should be interesting this year following Rockwell-Collin's take-over of B/E Aerospace in Kilkeel who were traditionally the anchor sponsor.

Aviation Ireland seems to be Foynes Boat Museums name moving forward but the article was talking about joining with Bray too. So a bit confusing.

Very early, and what I assume is still provisional booking for the Catalina on its website for a transit to Weston and display in July on the dates of Bray/Foynes. Quite possible for both given the new sharing agreement between the pair.. But nothing 100% confirmed for either show.

    http://catalina.cardinal-technologies.com/events.asp
    21 July 2017 - 22 July 2017
    Flight Type: Transit & Display
    From: Duxford - Dublin Weston -- 21 July 2017 - 10:45 (all times local)
    To: Dublin Weston - Duxford -- 22 July 2017 - 19:30 (all times local)

Bray dates are now officially confirmed as 22nd & 23rd July.

Week after RIAT so might be a bit tricky to get down so soon after coming back from England though for me :(

Is it likely we'll see the Red Arrows back in Bray this year?

Given the response to 2016 RA in Bray I would say it is possible. I would be surprised if Bray didn't at least make a request.

We won't know though until the RA schedule is released. End of Feb/Early March I would say we would know. With the RAF all requests need to be in by the end of Sept 2016 for 2017 displays and their display schedule is final once published, unlike civilian displays that add to the schedule on a booking by booking basis usually.

    A solo?

That'll be nice provided they don't put it miles out to sea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 352 ✭✭jasT1981

Yea, its a solo display. Hopefully not as far out as the Swedish.

However it is active military where as the Swedish aircraft were civil. So hopefully they will be closer like the Reds and Freece were compared to other non military jet displays last year.

Spectacular air display planned for Westport
A SPECTACULAR air display is planned to take place in Westport on Sunday, May 14.

The Westport 250 committee has lodged an application with Mayo County Council for the event to take place at the Quay in conjunction with a funfair and food market.

The anticipated audience is expected to be in excess of 5,000.

A licence is required to hold such an event in accordance with Part XVI of the Planning and Development Act, 2000.

Plans and particulars of the extravaganza can be inspected by members of the public at Mayo County Council HQ in Castlebar while submissions and observations can also be made.

A decision on the application is expected to be made before the end of next month.
Not planning much if only 5000 expected. Multiply it by 10 if they make it only half decent.

Would they be able to hold an Airshow there as it's the centre of Westport

Great to see another potential show popping up. Good luck to them and hopefully it can become an annual event.

I am still awaiting the go ahead to post the Newcastle date. I expect it to be public very soon with RAF schedules coming out. Though the date is already out there in some event pages, however I've agreed not to post the date until either the council announce it or RAF dates come out, whichever comes first.

There's a group of propeller planes flying in formation circles over South Dublin right now. Anyone happen to know what that is about? I can't find any info about any airshows today?
    Around Dundrum/Marlay Park -ish.

    4 Irish Air Corp PC9's

Their circuits gradually moved east as that bit of weather you see in the background came in from the west

I heard them as well passing over today, I think they were chasing away some foreign military aircraft that breached our airspace in February.

    (Sorry) :D

    Large update

    Portrush has confirmed
    RAF Red Arrows
RAF BBMF Lancaster, Spitfire & Hurricane
    RAF Tutor
    RAF Typhoon

And the following have been confirmed by operator but not Portrush.

    Wildcat Aerobatics
    Catalina

    Newcastle has now confirmed
    RAF Red Arrows
RAF BBMF Lancaster, Spitfire & Hurricane.

I've had a peak at the proposed flying plan. It looks like a great show this year if all comes to plan for Newcastle.

Bray - not confirmed by Airshow, Operators only so far have a listing

    The Blades
    SAAB Viggen
    Spanish F18 Hornet
    Irish Historic Flight

Sadly no Red Arrows for Bray, their schedule was released today and didn't have any listings in ROI. Just the 2 NI shows.

Foynes have agreed an aircraft share this year it seems with Bray, so the above are also possible for Foynes.

    Westport have the following confirmed

    BAC Strikemaster
    Gerry Humphreys RV7
    The Breitling Wingwalkers
    Catalina Flying Boat
    Eddie Goggins
    Irish Historic Flight Foundation
    Team RaVen
    Pitts Special - Neil Parkinson
    Sukhoi 26M
    The Irish Parachute Club
    Christen Eagle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,009 ✭✭✭Storm 10

Wing walkers and Strike master in twice in that lineup at Westport

    Whoops, thanks for that. Fixed.

Not a bad little line up for first year at Mayo, better than Birr has managed and they're a good few years going. It's all very very repetitive nowadays though.

Bray must have something special planned to not have the reds.....surly?

The Christen eagle displaying at Westport will be Sligo based G-CFIF. new smoke system fitted recently and was put to the test at Birr last weekend :)

The Westport Airshow on 14th May next is not restricted to 5000 spectators

The point is that a Licence under the Plannng legislation has to be obtained for any event which is expected to attract more than 5000.

Bray have announced the first part of their 2017 line up

    Spanish Air Force F18 Hornet
    Catalina flying boat.
    Team Raven,
The ‘Swedish Air Force Historic Flight’ Viggen
    Spitfire
    Patrouille Tranchant,
    Norwegian Mig 15
    Norwegian Vampire pair
The Irish Historic Flight Foundation Boeing Stearman & Chipmunks.

Foynes have also announced the same.

Yes seen them too. Looked like they were flying towards Bray. I thought it might have been part of a photo shoot for their announcement of this year's line up.

    Thats an awful line up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,009 ✭✭✭Storm 10

I waited in anticipation that something out of the ordinary was going to be announced but it was a very poor lineup that they posted , Foynes had the same lineup a day ahead of Bray, it's silly the way they went about it saying they would post at 7.15 yesterday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17 snaproll

Why are some people never happy with the line up at these shows.
Do they realise what it takes to get permission from the authorities these days to even put on a display with one aircraft never mind a number of different acts.
Be glad to have these airshows while they last because it may not be long until it is next to impossible to run them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 352 ✭✭jasT1981

The shows in Ireland are very lucky to have the IAA fully support and help develop airshows. Up here in NI and across the water in GB the CAA do everything they can to stifle airshows and are not very supportive.

Also, this is only round 1 of announcements. There is more to come including the RJF.

It is lacking the likes of Red Arrows and Frecce Tricolori but what a lot of people don't understand is you don't simply book air force displays like you would civilian displays like Team Raven, Strikemaster or the Grace Spitfire/Seafire duo we had last year.

The process is a long one, you first have to apply for aircraft close to 9 months in advance ( or in Brays case 10 months nearly) . Applications have to be in to the Air Forces by the end of September the year before and they will then allocate aircraft.

All a show can do is apply and say what they would like. However if they get them or not is fully up to the air forces and not the the event organizers, and usually air forces get around 600 application requests for a heck of a lot less display slots.

Also, there is a serious lack of jets on the airshow scene right now outside of military. The UK alone has lost so many jet displays in the wake of Shoreham as well as other displays like the Vulcan now being grounded for good.
