    Hi All,

I am thinking of buying a secondhand Astra (07/08) and have had some claims from people I know that the engine of this model isnt reliable etc. Any thoughts?

Also looking at possibly buying a warranty off carprotect.ie for a little peace of mind as we wouldnt be use to buying from private sellers.

    Any advice? Thanks.

These third party warranties are basically insurance policies against certain mechanical failures. Like any insurance policy they have limitations and exclusions. So make sure you are aware of these before buying especially around a 9 or 10 year car.

Aftermarket warranties aren'the much craic. I wouldn't like to be solely relying on one. That said you'd need to be crazy to buy a 07 Astra without one.

The max labour rate that car protect will pay is €70 including VAT per hour which rules out dealing with most main dealers unless you pay the difference and even at that most main dealers will be slow to work with these companies for various reasons. Then on the flip side, a lot of independents will not be in a position to deal with them either due to cash flow and the necessary paperwork.

I'd rethink the the whole plan OP.
