It's on a couple of channels tonight.

A few years since I last saw it and I'm more impressed than ever.

    Art.

I must have watched that movie well over 100 times when I was growing up. Now I'm older I can appreciate it for more than just a gangster movie. The scenes and dialogue in it are fantastic. While it's a true story it gives a very good insight as to what life as a hoodlum in the 60s and 70s was actually like. Classic movie that I would rate slightly higher than the Godfather series!

Get your hands on Casino if you can, not better than goodfellas but enjoyable all the same. Pesci and de niro are great in the two films.

Ach don't take it so literally. I only mean in my opinion (it's one of my favourite films obviously but alongside others) and objectively it is a superbly made film. There are definitely things more deserving of despairing over!

Same here gumbo1, the writing, direction, camera-work, editing, acting, soundtrack... it's the whole package I'm appreciating now - not just the fact it's full of sharp one-liners and great actors. Pity Ray Liotta didn't do much else of note. Unbelievable in it.

Ita one of those films you see and think it's brilliant

Years later you find it on tv and get the feeling back 'damn this is good'

Because I dont think it's the best movie ever

Go home and get your shinebox.

Its watchability is unmatched. A pure classic. Filmmaking at its best.

Sorry haven't only watched it again for the 9th time I still ( in my opinion believe) think the "Shawshank Redemption" is the best movie ever. I will concede however that Pesci was brilliant in the 2 afore mentioned movies.

The ending of Casino where joe Pesci is getting the **** beat out of him is a seriously powerful scene. Especially when they hold his head and make him watch his brother being beat to death. This post contains spoilers btw.

I'm in work at the moment and have started a conversation about old school gangster movies. One of the lads who is in his mid 30s still hasn't seen that one!! It is another classic even if it does induce a numb arse!

Goodfellas is better yea, but Once upon a time in America is still a classic that must be seen.

Hey I don't know if it's THE best movie ever either, but it's pretty damn great. I sure wouldn't despair if someone suggested it.

At the very least it's firmly in the canon of untouchable movie classics and I'd wager that none of those other classic films in the pantheon have anything on it in terms of energy, verve and raw watchability.

Out of curiosity: what, in your opinion, is the best? I'd probably say 2001 myself.

I have it on an early DVD where you've got to flip it over on the other side to watch the second half of the film. Could be a collectors' item. Might bring it along to the Antiques Roadshow if they're ever in Cork......

Absolutely insane that scene, i knew nothing about that film when i bought it years ago. Was a great find for 3quid. For me has the same vibe as goodfella's. Must give it a watch soon as it's been a while

    In your opinion

No, its a fact. Though do have fun rolling your eyes and trying to pick some lesser film that you will decree as better simply due to it being less popular.

I mean, Once upon a Time in America the better film? I despair, I really do. (insert **** smilie here)

(Actually, Midnight Run is the best film ever made, but the hipsters wouldn't agree on that either)

Casino is a poor derivative of Goodfellas. It's as if Scorsese just wanted to cash in on the Goodfellas brand.

Watched it tonight on TG4 of all places :p excellent, excellent movie.

Watched Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs over the Christmas break so I'm on a roll with the classics.

I don't think fact comes into whether something is the best. Sure, it's a fact Goodfellas is an excellent film, but whether it's better than another excellent film is a matter of opinion.

I agree, but as i said its not as good as goodfellas but if he's after watching it he shoud check out casino as he's on that kinda vibe, which why i suggested it.

If your into gangster movies I can't think how anyone thinks Goodfellas is better than The Godfather?

What was that other movie where Al Pacino went mental on the charlie ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,500 ✭✭✭✭DEFTLEFTHAND

Goodfellas was a closer depiction to what the Mafia is like in New York. Full of trashy blue collar guineas.

The Godfather films glorified the mob.

Good point - the godfather was full of decadent gentlemen running an efficient business. Goodfellas (and the sopranos as well) portrayed the mob in their true colours - short tempered, selfish bullies

    In your opinion

In my opinion Goodfellas is the second best movie of all time ........... after Mrs Doubtfire, obviously.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,351 ✭✭✭✭Harry Angstrom

Check out "once upon a time in America"

Once Upon a Time in America is a very problematic film. Leone was trying to make a spaghetti western with gangsters and the rape scene is just as objectionable as that in Straw Dogs.

Just out of curisoty while the thread is going, i'd love to hear the top 1-2 gangster movies people enjoy
