Newstalk audio on Saorsat test channel

I see that Newstalk is being carried as an extra audio channel on one of the Saorsat test card channels. When scanning the Saorsat transponder it usually comes in as the 2nd test channel. Audio may first be Raidio na Gaeltachta when you listen. However if you can change the audio channel, you can listen to Newstalk.
SID for the channel is 5110 with Video PID as 5106 and 2 audio PIDs 5229 for Raidio na G (language type is flagged as iri) and 5506 for Newstalk (language type is flagged as qaa).

Interesting and very welcome if its a sign of things to come. I'm a regular listener but live in an area with poor FM coverage from Newstalk. We can but hope.

I, more often than not, use the internet stream

Yes it's poor form that they and Today FM aren't on Saorview. They are national channels after all. Surely the costs wouldn't be very big. At least Newstalk is on Astra though.

It was going to cost Irish TV €1 million a year for access to Saorview. It would probably be less for a radio station, but it would likely still be substantial.

Newstalk and Today FM have obviously made the commercial decision that it would not be worthwhile for the number of extra listeners it would attract.

I just did a retune it seems to have been short lived. All I'm getting is the usual RTE radio channels on the test cards and the audio test channels are all on silent.

I found it on one of the test cards but you had to select the second audio channel. The main audio was RnaG I think. Of course it could well have been one of the engineers listening for his own amusement and hit the wrong button in the workshop or something ;) I'm not near a set to check at the moment.

Just checked now, Newstalk working on the tv test card, on the second audio.

It is for linking audio to FM transmitters, replacing another satellite link.

I'd expect audio to be in synch (or almost depending on satellite receiver) with Newstalk on FM

Newstalk is also of course on Astra 28., but audio currently lags FM by about 5 seconds.

Saorsat is also lagging by about 4 seconds when compared to Newstalk 106 in Dublin.

I only noticed this very recently. It makes me wonder what is the target audience for this. It doesn't exist on the Freesat EPG. Who do they expect to use it?

The Freesat EPG is not the 'be-all' ....... plenty users out there who do not have/need/use Freesat EPG.

Newstalk has been on 28 for years. I find there are often short dropouts of 30 seconds or so. I've never established if it's a problem on my end or theirs.

I have often listened to it on 28, I haven't noticed it dropping.

However on Saorsat I did get drop out on RTE Gold, but I think it was the Walker box.

Ps. The walker box died on me, so I'm back using the Triax 114
