First Car - Ford Fiesta

I've decided a 1.2 Ford Fiesta (2009+) will do me nicely for my first car (done my 12 lessons and waiting on a date for the test).

Budget is 5k. What I'd like some advice on is what should I expect to get for the budget. I know it all depends but it would be good to have an idea of what to look for. So if you guys were out shopping for a Fiesta with 5k in your pocket what would you be looking for in relation to year, mileage, previous owner etc.

Assuming dealers will be more expensive is it worth it to have a bit of security etc for a first car by buying from a dealer ?

5k is probably at the lower end of the market for a 09+ Fiesta. You're not going to get much in the way of a decent warranty from a dealer on a 5k 8 year old car unless you end up paying more for the car. You're probably looking at 3 month engine and gearbox warranty from a dealer in that price range and that might be pretty much worthless if bought from an Arthur Daley type dealer. If buying privately you would need to get the car inspected by a mechanic or someone who knows their way around cars. Either way you need to do background checks on anything you would consider buying.

Also your 5k might go further by importing one from NI or the UK.

If I stretched to 7k would that drastically improve my options ? I'd rather spend the bit extra for better peace of mind in terms of a warranty rather than gambling a bit on something privately.

Here is a 2010 with tiny mileage asking under 7k from a main dealer. Should be able to do better on that price if you are buying without an old car to trade in. Being a main dealer they should be reputable and a safe enough bet.
