Unless you have something specific in your contract saying you don't have to provide a sick note then yes you have to provide a sick note if you want paid.

On a side note if you are working 3 days or less per week you are entitled to claim Job Seeker's for the remaining days. You would be mad not to.

For what it's worth I worked part time in a few jobs years ago. I too was asked for a sick note and I just fobbed them off. In one job I just kept saying I would give it to them (they eventually stopped asking) and in another job I simply said I didn't go to the doctors. Didn't have the money to be paying 50 euro for a cold. Just rested up.

So just say you didn't go to the doctors. If they still want one just say you're ok now. What are you meant to do? Go to the doctors AFTER you're sick to get something spending money? Most jobs will be cool with it.

As said above its just about getting paid for the day. If you're only part time it's not worth giving a sick note.

You should not have to provide that. Everyone has the flu anyway, they want you to fork out 50 quid for a note to say that! It's more than 2 days, that's when they ask. Load of ****e that is.

Not everyone has the flu. There are lots of people with heavy colds who say they've the flu.

What is your employers policy on sick leave? It varies from workplace to workplace.

There is no entitlement to sick leave (paid or unpaid) in this country. It's crazy, but that's how it is.

If they want a sick note, you should provide it. But you try saying that you didn't go to the doctor because it wasn't that bad, and see if they fire you over it - probably they won't.

Really, in each job you need to check your contact and follow whatever procedures they set out for sick leave. Some places insist on a sick note each time. Some done. In another thread, a poster said that his company even sends a doctor to the house each time someone calls in sick!

NB If you were well enough to be posting on boards the day after, then most likely you had a very bad cold. Flu, aka influenza, is far more serious illness which knocks you back a lot more than a day or two.
