So.......if I move to the UK for six months and buy a car immediately, I can then move back ( after six months ) without paying VRT ? Is it that simple ? I'm part retired professional and finding work won't be a problem. Please advise.

It is not as simple as that.

You need to be 'permanently' resident in the UK and a stay of less than a year is not likely to be enough. If you are self employed, it might be more difficult to establish your residency if you cannot show your employment record is genuine. If you retain your Irish home, this might be seen as evidence of non-change of residency. Also, the car needs to clock up the miles to show it is indeed used in the UK.

You are required to keep the car for at least 12 months on return, and, it used to be, a total of two years in total.

Overall, probably not worth it unless you are going to keep the car for a long time and it is an expensive model.

    Thanks for the prompt reply.
I had a feeling there would be a few glitches. However, I'm mobile , fancy a change of scene anyway and I'd like a premium level car not imported here which I will probably keep for ten years. Do you know what the position on VAT is ? As far as I can see Revenue do not charge VAT on second hand cars. ?
If you can show a continuous work record and evidence of residence in the UK I can't see how Revenue can argue with that ?

VAT is only charged on a car that is brand new or where a used car is less than 6 months old and/or has less than 6000km on the clock.

Vrt exemption rules are here and quite particular:

If VAT is chargeable then the original VAT is refunded.
