    I was car hunting today.

Really tempted by 2 cars to change to, marginal difference in age, big difference in price.

Which would you go for? Both 1.6 diesel.

152 Opel Astra Sri, good spec.
161 Vw Golf Highline, basically has everything, as think previous owner got a few extras.

The Golf is €3500 more than the Astra.
    Too much?

The Highline Golf has loads of kit as standard now, so it's possible that there was nothing extra spec'd on that car.

Of those 2 I'd have the Golf every time. By far better residuals, better kit, better image, nicer to drive (is that the old model Astra? If so then definitely go with the Golf). That 3.5k saving will be wiped when you go to trade that car down the road.

No, it's the new model astra, wouldn't touch the old model. Quite like styling of the new one though.

Drove both, golf definitely nicer and feels a nicer place to be, but I was pleasantly surprised by the Opel, nicer than I'd thought it would be.

I appreciate the Golf will hold its value better, have been an owner in the past. Tempted to go for the Golf, considering its also a year fresher.

We have the 151 110bhp 1.2 Highline Golf, it has all the bells and whistles, got it on a 1.9% PCP and there ain't no way we are giving it back

If there is only 3,500 difference between a 152 Astra and 161 Golf then it sounds to me like the Astra is a bit on the expensive side. I'd expect a Golf to retain it's value more than a similar Astra when you go to trade it at a later stage.

Golf Highline is very well equipped these days especially in the second half of 2016 when they gained leather heated seats and 18" alloy wheels as standard.

It's apples and oranges, different models, different years.
The Golf is probably the better option although I suspect the Astra has a better engine.
