Are you grumpy in the morning?

I am. I'm grumpy because it takes my body a few hours to adjust to being awake. I usually feel pretty crap in the morning, physically and mentally. I am trying to figure out why. I'm in good physical condition, decent diet (no caffeine/drink) and get about 7 hours sleep. My mental health is at it's worst in the morning.

Come lunch time, I'm fine, no issues but rarely any earlier.

    Maybe it's this.

    Am I alone?

If you're that grumpy try a few more hours of sleep. Also get a sunrise alarm clock. They wake up gradually instead of the jolt of an alarm clock, it doesn't make you as grumpy.

Yeah but it's down to a mix of lack of sleep and my morning routine has changed and can be quite hectic. I used to be very happy in the mornings

No, I'm a delight in the morning. I hit my peak at about 2pm then I am exhausted by 5pm.

I wouldn't say I'm grumpy as such, but I'm easily irritated if I'm not left to mooch around and wake up in my own time.
No chat out of me until 11am, and if you tried making small talk you probably would say I was grumpy :D

    Cycling will encourage serotonin.

I am grumpy in the morning. Would prefer not to be. I don't put it down to mental health though.

I'm similar to yourself OP. The mornings are not my friend. It's the late evening and night that I'm at my best.

Ditto. Had to take the dart this morning and the walk to the station pisses me off. Cycling to work at a nice steady pace is very therapeutic for me, maybe even my favourite part of the day.

I'm more of a night owl, but I'm generally fine in the morning, regardless of whether I've had enough sleep. I always go through a mid-afternoon slump though.

Right now I'm grumpy... but that's the post xmas midwinter blues... walking to work in the dark... walking home from work in the dark.

How do you get to work? Walking into work when it's daylight is usually enough to kickstart my engine and dispel the grumpiness.

Yes, it takes me about 2 hours to properly wake up.

I hate mornings, always have. How grumpy I am depends on how much sleep I've managed to get. It can take me an hour or two to be on the same planet after waking. Wide awake in the evenings and at night. I'm a night owl and have bouts of insomnia as well so kinda resent my sleep being interrupted when I eventually manage to get some :P

Not grumpy just good for nothing and wrecked. I'm a terrible morning person and struggle out of bed at about 8:30am on weekdays. Getting up before 8am is absolute torture if I have to do it on occasion.

On the other hand no matter how tired I am during the day I come alive at about 9pm and have to force myself to bed before 1am.

God no....I leap out of the bed, can can along the landing, bump down the stairs on my arse singing zipededoda, do 100 jumping jacks while waiting for the kettle to boil and then it's out for a 10k run.

Don't look at me for the rest of the day then though or I'll bite the head off you I'm so wrecked.

More of a Dope, in the mornings.
Not grumpy, just not functioning very rapidly. Needs a pint of fresh coffee to get me off the ground, and then...zoom!

May I ask the reason for your derision?

I'm pretty sure I get enough sleep, I never feel overly tired when I wake. I have no issue getting out of bed, it's when I get out, the grumpiness hits me.

It's just a horrible morning feeling in my body, like a discomfort. I guess it's my body taking its sweet time adjusting. When it's adjusted, I'm fine. It's happening for years though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,075 ✭✭✭IamtheWalrus

Me three. Worse in the morning though.

Ever been able to pinpoint why? I guess the simplest answer would be low-level depression but it's not only mental. If I sit as rest and meditate, I can feel my body is uncomfortable.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 157 ✭✭tomthetank

Nightmare in the morning. Not getting enough sleep usually contributes, as I'm a nightowl and have to be up at 5.30am for work. So usually about 4 - 5 hours sleep.

The mental stuff is worse than the physical. I go through a range of negative emotions from I HATE THE WORLD AND NEED TO REEVALUATE MY LIFE WHY IS IT SO SH1T I AM SUCH A FAILURE AND I HATE EVERYTHING up until about 10am, then after about three coffees and a bit of sunlight I'm grand.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 182 ✭✭Jodotman

Yes exhausted in the morning and affecting work. If I go to bed at 12 and get up at 8 I'm exhausted for around two hours.

If I go to bed at three in the morning on thr weekendand get up at 11 A.M I am full of energy and not a bother on me.

    Really wrecks my head!

I always picked jobs that were late ones. In college I just had to deal with it. I think I'm just a night person over all, no reason for it.

This leads me to believe you don't like aspects of your work day? Whereas the weekend is your time and the tiredness becomes a non-entity.

With you on the negative emotions but I'm pretty sure the anger and frustration is a self-distraction.

Without a doubt. I'm a night owl so my 6am wake up call Mon-Fri is not my favorite part of the day.

I'm a bit narkey till I get some caffeine into me, not too bad though, just don't ask me to get or fix or do anything for you, after brekkie and a tea/coffee my brain has woken up and I'm grand .

I'm okay until i meet one of the chripy morning people, then I'm grumpy for the day.

You are getting up too late and too much sleep is as bad as not enough.

No, few times I had to go into work around 12 and stayed up later than normal. 100% energized.

I have varied my sleep hours, getting up times, sleep times, nothing has fixed it. But I wonder has any of them made it slightly less, hmm.

I'm a complete bítch in the morn. Everything and everyone annoys me. I'd love to try one of the sunrise clocks thingies. Anyone recommend?

I'm fine so long as I'm let go through my morning routine as usual. I generally like routine and plans anyway but I will be especially grumpy if my morning routine is interrupted

My sister has one and she went from never being up on time to perfect timing with waking up. I might get the same one myself.

I am fine in the mornings. Probably the time I am least likely to be grumpy.

But when I wake up after having a cat nap I am a like a demon.

Nox I didn't think I'd ever agree i was like you but ... I'm like you. I'll be grumpy all day and ready to run a marathon at 11pm. Seriously think I'm solar powered like those lights you see in people's gardens

The worst is when you are still semi conscious and then woken just before drifting off. That's like torture.

I'm not too grumpy in the morning, just the odd time if I haven't had enough sleep. I wouldnt call it grumpy though, more like a mildly irritated Snow White :)

Only if Snow White has buggered off without giving me a cuddle. Otherwise I'm somewhere between Sleepy and Happy.

I am the Queen of mornings. I get up at 05.20AM, shower my tired ass, meditate, make my lunch, do my face & walk 4k into town. Like the super hero I am.

I'm very grumpy in the morning. In the afternoon too. And night time.
