At least 9 people are wounded at Fort Lauderdale airport in Florida.
Terminal 2 at the airport has been evacuated, the shooter is in custody.

It is unknown if it is terrorism or a person with mental problems.

It would be news if shots were not fired in the USA.

RobertKK, I have to ask. Do you hover over twitter waiting for sh*t to happen? You are like Mr Scoops around here always ready to drop another bit of news our way. I honestly don't know how you do it.

It had already been on the breaking news thing on BBC before this thread was started and they're usually fairly slow.

I got a CNN alert on my phone.

Shooting was in the baggage claim area.

Have travelled a few times through the US and when your travelling internally the backage reclaim area is open to the public, there's no checks on people or secure zone like most airports. Someone can basically walk in off the street and reclaim a bag and leave or in this case what looks like went in with a gun, real amateur hour for a country who's airports are secure in so many other ways.

Seriously, this is just happening and you want a motive already?

Internal flights are different in the US as they are as normal as getting on a bus so many airports have a domestic terminal.

I don't get how having the baggage area open to the public makes it any less secure as the passenger bags are still screened.

A shooter can still kill a lot of people by not having access to the baggage area in a busy airport so I don't really see what your point is.

Just another normal day in the US then

Dont really give hoot about motive, just another mindless act for no reasons.

People killed for nothing. Disgusting and just so unlucky to be in wrong place at wrong time

Oh of course. But part of me is always curious what would cause someone to do such horrendous acts of killing innocent people.

I think its human nature to ask "Why?" when something like this happens. For myself, I'd be wondering if this could have happened to me? And I think we all do that subconsciously.

Sheriff interviewed, said shooter was passenger on inbound plane, gun was in checked baggage, he retrieved gun from luggage and then started shooting. Shooter unharmed and being interviewed by FBI.

Appears now to be only one shooter.

He was on a Canadian Airlines flight from Canada, had military ID (no idea if Canadian or US or other), gun can be carried unloaded in the hold. Apparently he loaded the gun in the toilets of the airport.

A mexican sounding name was going around a lot , also the idea that the gun was brought in on a Candian flight, retrieved from shooters baggage.

Of course you ask why, but those details are not known yet.

This is the US were it's easy to get guns and people with all kind of mental health issues can easily access them, so these incidents are going to continue to happen without an apparent motive until they change their stupid laws and save lives.

Except in this instance the guy flew in from Canada with the gun ... assuming earlier info on this thread is correct???

Internal flights in the USA are going to be locked down after this. Always found the openness of the baggage reclaim to be a little odd.

But according to previous posts, this guy arrived on a flight and collected his bag from the reclaim area. Locking it down wouldn't stop something like this from happening

I've always thought the main risk from the baggage area being so open was theft.

Sorry, I was talking about theft of baggage. Restricting people's ability to carry guns on their person in an airport terminal or their ability to remove them from their luggage in an airport terminal, is the only way to stop something like this happening. Interesting to read that this person flew in from Canada.

Now, now, you can take your gun out of your bag and conceal it on your person when you get to the parking lot.

American media is just shocking. I watched ten minutes of Fox News yesterday. It was a show called Fox and Friends I think. I swear it was like watching a cult talk about it's leader. They couldn't go a minute without complimenting Trump on some inane ****e.
