It's a loan word from Hindi, where it means something from Bengal. It came to be used as a shorthand for houses in the Bengal style. Hindi is a lot further from English than most sources of loan words, which is probably why it seems so alien.

I thought it was an Irish word. Two lads building a house ran out of bricks half way through, and one of them said ah, it'll be grand, we'll just bung a low roof on it.
