Commercial motor tax conversion query

Are there restrictions on the types of cars or SUVs you can successfully convert to commercial tax rates? And is it possible for a judgement to be granted before the said conversion takes place? I'm aware there was a clampdown a number of years ago but I'm curious for real feedback for anyone who has gone through the process.

I have a particular hatch back that would be well suited for what we do as a business, hence the query. We have an Ltd and VAT number if that makes any odds.

    Thanks!

Almost any hatch back or estate can be converted to two seat commercial.

You need to have commercial insurance to get commercial tax rates.
Call your local tax office and ask to speak to the person responsible for processing conversions to find out what you need to do.
    Dublin is 2228000.

Are you referring to professional insurance or motor insurance?

Commercial insurance covers the use of the vehicle by the business. It's one of the clauses in the policy.

No point going down the conversion route if you don't have a business need for the vehicle.

Other docs needed are as follows.
    Test 48
    Self declaration
    weights docket
    Commercial insurance policy
    VRC
    engineers declaration.

I know loads of people using commercials (taxed commercially) for private use and never even dreamt of having their own business or needing it for business use.

They need to have commercial insurance.
I was referring to getting a conversion done to get commercial tax. Still needs insurance and a deep pocket for the conversion.

Anybody can insure a commercially taxed vehicle is the point I'm making you don't need to actually have a business or need of for commercial use.
