Was thinking of making the cigarette socket a permanent live.
    Found the fuse box.
Passenger side up underneath the glove box.

The back isn't the best anymore and it's really awkward to get at so might not be worth the hassle.
Anyone know which fuse is the cig socket???

One of the blue 15A's normally. Could also be another main fuse box in the engine bay which will have it.

Looks like the 15A third down' on the third row is marked p outlet?

Try removing it and see if that cuts the power to the socket

Thanks lads I'll check it out tomorrow.

    That was it alright!

A bit more access to the fuses with the panel removed but still tight enough for me to try and figure out how to go about it.

Or would I be better off just to piggyback with something like this?
Looks like the wrong type fuse though!
Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291517377396

Edit: forgot to mention it's to power a dash cam while I'm parked.

    Or maybe this???

Now that you told us what you need the power for it will be easier :)
    What car is it?

What power would this draw overnight? Is it dependent on what movement is detected?

I don't need it on at night as it will be parked on private property.

Same as me but I would still like to have it on at night. Just wondering would it be a serious drain on the battery.

I think there is a low voltage protector on the hard wire kit.
My last car(A4) had a permanent live cig socket and I often forgot to plug it out so at times it was running the dash cam for up to 18 hours.

Halfords wire you up for 35 euro if the dash cam is bought there (not all models). Do you know if they wire it in such a way that it is live when the engine is off? I suppose I could ask them.

Wouldn't let them wire a plug tbh.

No mine runs 24/7 and there's never an issue. Obviously as the battery in the car reaches it's end of life it may become an issue then.

Where would you get it done? Tidily?
I could do it myself but there would probably be wires everywhere.

Tbh, unless you feel very comfortable with this stuff, swing by a local auto electrician and get their opinion

Decided to go the with this.

Just waiting for the piggyback fuse holder to arrive.
I'm wondering what fuse to go off for a permanent live.
Would the trunk open 7.5 be permanent and if so suitable?

As long as there is power going to it with ignition off, then yes :).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,612 ✭✭✭✭blade1

Thanks Hal, I'll try that so and see how it goes.

Finally fuse holder arrived and it's all hooked now and working as I want.
A couple of things I'm not sure of though.
Is where I grounded it seem ok?
Also, when the cam is switched off, would there be still a bit of drain from the battery?

There shouldnt be drain if its off, unless it has internal battery that its charging. Ground looks fine, are you tidying the cables from hanging ?

Yep, I'll be tidying up the wires, just wanted to make sure everything was ok first.

The reason I ask about the power drain is, I fitted a 5volt usb type power socket to a bike before and it kept draining the battery even with nothing plug in.
The cam is a capacitor type one.
