How does one go about challenging the CO2 figure for my car? It is shown as 170 mg instead of 150 mg.

What is in the logbook/VLC/V5? How do you know the 150 figure is correct and 170 figure is wrong?

The figure comes from the manufacturer and is listed on the vehicles registration document. How do you know it is different?

The figure on the logbook is 170. I think this refers to a different version of the car. The UK Gov site shows many versions of the car with none quoting 170, but quotes 137, 150, 130, and 132 for various versions, but the closest is 150 to the car I have.

    Is the car automatic?

If the log book says 170 then that is what they got from the manufacturer. If it's a UK import then they go by what figure is in the V5 registration which would have been from the manufacturer too.

It is a VW DSG gearbox.

If you don't think the info on the V5/VLC is correct, then you'll need to get the Certificate of Conformity for the vehicle, either from the original supplying dealership or VW themselves. This will state the Co2 emissions attached to that chassis number.

It's unlikely to be incorrect though.

If you search Donedeal/Carzone for a similar car and put the reg through motortax.ie to find the rate is it giving the reduced rate?

There are many different bhp options for the same engine, also differences in tyre size, suspension setup, trim level, body shape etc will have an effect on the emissions figure for a particular individual car.

There is virtually no chance that this is an error. The figure is the figure and would have been verifiable pre-purchase for free online.

After extensive research, I have come to the conclusion the figure is wrong, but the error is not that significant. The figure on the logbook is 170 but should be 164. They are both in the same tax bracket, so no short term gain. The figure would need to be 155 or less. The DSG gearbos adds about 8 to the number, but the manual version is coming in at 156, so no gain there anyway as it would need to be 155.

I am still interested in finding out who I appeal to though. I tried VW Ireland but no help in anyway - basically I would have to go to VW Germany.

What's the engine, body style and year? Should be able to find historical details of the various options.

A 170 PD DSG estate from 08 could be as high as 170g

I've gone through all the data and the conclusion I have come to is that the CO2 figure is indeed wrong but it is still in the same tax band.

The DSG gearbox adds 8mg to the figure as far as I can see, and even without that, the CO2 would be within the 156 to 170 band. I still intend to see if I can get it changed, but knowing the system, it will be nearly impossible. Particularly as VW appear to be uncooperative.

Can you tell us the exact model you have? PM the reg if you like.

You can get a certificate of conformity from VW.
