OH has this car a year since September last. Went for its "first" service a month ago to a VW garage in the Midlands, what with all the emissions issues at present, decided to "register" it with the dealer. When putting fancy key into ignition the other day all fine, except when parked up, took key out and the "insert" came out with key. Put it back in and car is working away. Need to get it fixed though....just wondering if this would be under guarantee? or could I take it to where we used to go, Toyota garage? Wasn't a bit pleased with the overall experience with this VW dealer.....customer care non existent and now this!

Just to be a little clearer, is it the key that is broke or the slot on the dashboard that the key goes into that is broke?

If it's still under the original manufacturer's 3 year warranty then you will need to take it to a VW dealer. If it's still under a used car warranty from where you bought it then you probably have to take it back to them to repair. If it's no longer under any warranty but then you can pretty much bring to any garage as you will be paying to have it repaired/replaced. Not sure why you would want to bring a VW to a Toyota dealer unless you bought it from them and they will cover the cost of fixing it.

When was the car originally purchased? It could well still be under warranty and the key holder should be covered. Not sure what the visit to the dealer has to do with it though, do you think they were jimmying it with a screwdriver in the hope of a few extra bob or something?

Car bought in September 2015, second hand. Visit to the dealer vis a vis warranty. It has also been called in for update on software for this emissions problem. Now nervous about this....screwdriver job!!!

The slot! Apparently, it is under guarantee til March 2017 or 90k mileage.
