Keep runflats or replace with regular tyres

    Hi all,

In a bit of a predicament. The two 2 rear tyres on my F30 will need replacing soon. The current tyres are run flats in a 255/55 R19 size. These are quite hard to find in stock from ringing around, and are quite costly. Would I be better off ditching the runflats, and going for the exact same tyre in a regular type, rather than be faced with this predicament each time I need to change the tyres?

Are you sure they are not 255/35/R19 on the rear of the F30?

I have an F10 with awkward size tyres on the rear, they are run flats too but to be honest I find buying tyres in these sizes online to be cheaper than buying local. My local tyre centre that I normally use can order them in for me but the price their wholesaler charges for them is a lot higher than me buying them online.

You're talking about €420 delivered for 2 Conti runflats from camskill:
    https://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?show=112246

or the Conti non runflats cost about €345 delivered
    https://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?show=129320

So your talking about €100 difference between a pair of run flats v non run flats in that size. Add about another €30 to have either set fitted somewhere locally.

BTW its not recommended to mix non runflats and runflats on the same car as they have different handling characteristics to each other and can upset the balance and ride of the car. Either go with all one type or the other would be my advice.

    Thanks for your reply,

You're right, it has a mix, 255/35/R19 on the front and 255/55/R19 on the rear. It currently has Bridgestone Potenza's on it, from a quick search online I can get them for about 230 a corner. Does it make much of a difference having different sized tyres front and rear, obviously has something to do with the fact that it is a rear-wheel drive car?

If the tyre sizes are the same that came originally from the factory then you should have something like 225/40/R19 on the front and 255/35/R19 on the rear. This is a typical staggered setup some models come with from BMW.
