Does mileage matter?

    Hi
Was wondering what is considered average mileage these days?
Friend of mine said car values go down significantly when cars hit 100000km before 3 years and garages penalise heavily. His advice was to change cars well before this figure. Sounds like rubbish to me.
Does mileage make this much difference on 2/3 year old cars?

Have a look on car selling websites and compare the same models with different mileage and youll see the difference.

One thing is for certain. If you can prove to me your car was regularly serviced on time and we'll maintained I'd take it over a car with half the miles and no record. The type of driving you do will effect the car. 100k kms on motorway is very different to the same in a town/city

Changing cars in order to fend off higher depreciation through above average mileage is really a false economy. As far as I can see unless your buying straight and/or financing a new car then dealers are going to beat down the trade-in value of your old car no matter what. Above average mileage, wrong colour or spec, etc are reasons they will use to knock down it's value. Their job is to buy it at the lowest price possible and sell it on for the most they can get.

Using the various PCP info you could quantify how much mileage effects a 3 year old car.

I think 6c/km is a typical enough figure so 40k kms extra attracts a €2400 charge.... 80k kms extra would be almost €5k

Not a huge difference I suppose but not loose change either.

Mileage between private sellers and buyers isn't as a big a deal if proper regular maintenance is evident. I can imagine mileage is a huge deal for dealers though, because it's just another tool they can use to beat down the trade in value.

It used to be 100k miles! When did it change?

Some buyers won't consider something once it has passed the six digit threshold but the fact remains that once a car has been looked after, mileage shouldn't really matter that much. It is a mental block and nothing more. But I don't think prices plummet at this point, they continue to decrease for each year, condition, etc.

For the record, my 09 520d is on 180,000kms with full BMW service history (and given a two year warranty when I bought it in June). The car feels as good as a new model!

Irish drivers are mental. They want the diesel for the cheap tax, but diesel needs miles. And yet they flinch at a diesel with miles. It makes no sense.

For the record I have a golf with 180 k km on. Main dealer services all the way, including new timing belt and clutch/dmf. The car is driven 90 % motorway. Granted I am biased, but I would take that over a diesel with 80 k km, patchy service history and a couple of years of short school runs under the bonnet.

My car is a 07 bought in 08 260,000 km, service it myself and use local mechanic for anything I can't do myself. Still going strong of course it depends what car you buy also a different brand might not last half as long with the same treatment.

Have to agree, I bought a 07 TDI golf in 2010 with 107,000 miles on the clock. It had a full VW service history and I was delighted buying it. It now has 315,000 miles on it and still going strong :) Once a car is well maintained then it will last a lot longer :)

People also need to realise that 100k km is only 62k-ish miles. It's nothing massive for a 3 year old car.

I completely agree that mileage shouldn't matter and service history and type of driving on a diesel is more important but some people won't buy a relatively new car with a high mileage apparently and so dealers don't want to take them or will penalise them heavily according to my pal.
Was wondering if this is the case but reckon it's only another tool for the dealer to beat you down.

A dealer will use every trick they can to give you less on a trade in :)

Not really they'll just say what they will allow you and hike up the price of the car you are buying to make it look like you are getting a good price for your trade in.

It's well over the average for a 3 year old car.

21k a year works out around 400 a week. Nothing huge if you're doing an 60 miles a day commute and some driving on the weekend. It's in and around what I do.
Servicing and maintenance is far more important to me than mileage. Obviously there is a limit in terms of mileage being reasonable

I'd agree here. My round trip to work is 70km on the M50. Add in ~100km at the weekend, you're at 450km for the week. Even if you only did that for 11 months of the year, you're at 21,600km.

If someone did the length of the M50 daily, you'd be racking up nearly 100km a day easily.

Those would be above average weekly figures though.I reckon your average car registered in Jan 2014 for sale would have less than 60k km on it.

Bought an 03 Avensis diesel the Thursday before Christmas with 277,000 miles on the clock. Have added another 800 since, its running perfect. Was probably a taxi at some point in the past. Good servicing and long hard runs are the life of any diesel. Over the 800 miles, it averaged 50mpg. Anywhere I could, it was sitting at 80mph.

If it was a taxi would that not have meant lots of short stop-start runs I would have thought?

Irish people only look at the year on the plate or the miles on the clock.

It doesn't matter if it has never been serviced or has a rusted underbody with bald tyres and a 0.9 L engine.

As long as it's a brand new 171-D with <100 miles on the clock, it'll sell.

Could do, but they are generally well serviced, and some never seem to cool down. Just going by the various screw holes on the centre console.

If it's a brand new 171 with 100 miles on the clock it's extremely unlikely to have rust on the underbody or bald tyres for that matter and it's not likely to need a service either :p

    He's on about miles.
20k kms/annum is about average IMO, 20k miles/annum is quite a bit more.
