I have had a Vauxhall insignia 8 months , I was driving home on the motorway on nye and the bottom end went in the car.

Would this be to big a job to do in a 09 insignia worth 7/8 grand..or would he be better off going threw his warranty insurance if there is such a thing

In what way is there any warranty and insurance won't cover that.

What do you mean by warranty insurance? Do you just have a regular insurance or a second warranty one from the likes of mapfre?

Or are you thinking the dealer who sold it to you should cover it?

Sorry I never heard that term before, 'the bottom end went'. What does that mean? Did the rear of the car come off? Are we talking about the exhaust?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,644 ✭✭✭✭punisher5112

I guess the engine sh1t itself.

I always thought the crankshat was gone and/or complete engine rebuild needed?

Your insurance policy will not cover mechanical failure if that is what you mean OP.

If you are referring to a third party warranty you got with the car when you bought it then you may be able to claim off it depending on the terms of the warranty and if the damage is covered under it.

I'm waiting on him to come back to me he is getting it checked out,

Does anyone know roughly how much an engine rebuild would cost

If it ran out of oil, it will need a replacement engine and turbo.

Ya he have me12 months warranty , I'm just thinking instead of him paying for labour and a new engine would he be better off giving me a replacement car.

He is a dealer a small dealer around 30/40 cars ..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,362 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Unless it's a main dealer (even they wouldn't) it's very unlikely he will be getting you a new engine. Most likely he will source a reconditioned or second hand one at a fraction of the price of a new one. I'd insist on a reconditioned one as you have no idea what state a second hand one is in.

I'd also be very surprised if you would get another car off them 8 months later.

I'm hoping it won't be worth doing I'm hoping it will cost to much cause I don't want a car with a second hand enguine..

I heard around €€3/4 grand all in to rebuild

How would it be covered by warranty if the engine ran out of oil? Surely that's negligence, no?

It didn't run out of oil, oil water coolant everything was in it, I only have it serviced 1month ago

My mistake, I misread a previous post, I though somebody said it ran out of oil and needs a new engine and turbo, wasn't you.

What causes a sudden bottom end failure? And happens when if fails? Knocking and engine cuts out?

I just re-read this. You know it's possible that it could be the dual mass flywheel. It can give similar noises to a bottom end knocking when it goes.

How many miles on it OP? Did it have a verified history?

Bottom ends don't just go for any old reason on a car.

The enguine is not even ticking over now

97 miles . No just a car check history..that's what I said to the dealer.

The AA mechanic said it was the bottom end, but I will have a answer off the dealer tomorrow..

I'm not sure . I don't know much about cars but makes sense if the engine just stopped that they might not have been genuine

Get the uk reg number(it will be on the vehicle registration cert) and enter it into the M.O.T. history check. (google it.) That will tell you the mileage at previous M.O.T.s in the uk.

It doesn't give mileage at last MOT, just the vehicle details and the mot expiry date.

Look up mot history there are 2 different links.

Also it may never have had one all depends on whether it was up north or in UK also.

My dealer got an asser to strip done the car he had it for a week. I gave him my service history invoices serviced twice in 22km..

He has come back today with his conclusion that the oil filter failed, and that it was a genuine Vauxhall oil filter, that he is washing his hands of it that it's on me. Or I can sue my mechanic..

The filter that he says failed was a hann filter hu 7004 oem approved ..

If a filter is at fault, you will need your mechanic to put a claim with his supplier, who will then pass it on to the importer all the way back to the filter manufacture. It is a long winded way to go, but you need to get the full report from the assesor and keep all records.

Ya I will, the asser I have going looking at the car will do his report and look for proof that the oil filter failed..

My dealer is only trying to get out of the warranty plain and simple he is a scumbag

Did you ever do the mot history check in the end?

He might not be. I presume you mean a Mann filter, if the filter is at fault and could well be, why would he cover it.

Make sure you keep all parts for your claim.

Just thinking, the Insignia has a long life filter in them, 20 or 30k intervals. I think they are a paper insert filter. I have heard of these failing, but only when they where long over due a change,1 oil filter in a Megane and a diesel fuel filter in a Mondeo, filters fell to sunder and started to get sucked into the engine. Surely oil pressure would have dropped and that caused the bottom end to fail. You would have gotten a warning light on the dash then.
