Are most shops open? Would it be Sunday times?

Where? Which shops? Shops are open nearly everyday anyway. Go on whatever website is relevant to the shop you're thinking of and check there, easy.

Two garages near me are just opening up. No idea what kinda shop you want though?

Today is not a bank holiday.

Most shops will open as normal but some smaller business will close to give staff a day in lieu for yesterday.

    I've just been out.

Everything is closed. EVERYTHING!!! The 24hr McDonalds is closed, the shop in Dun Laoghaire that never closes is closed.

    Not a sinner around.

Today is most certainly a Bank Holiday (For New Year's Day)

Public Holiday entitlements would depend on how your employer treated yesterday.

Banks etc are CLOSED. SEPA does not operate.

As far as I know most places are back to normal tomorrow (Tuesday, 3rd) but a lot of bigger chain stores (Tesco, Dunnes, etc) seem to be back to normal as of this morning?

Could well be wrong, but that's the way it looks to me, anyway. I think Petrol stations and the likes are all back to normal hours, anyway.

Not that I'd begrudge anyone working in retail the few days off. I don't work in retail (any more) but if I did I know i'd much rather be waking up to a relaxing day today, rather than dealing with people hassling you to find 'da dealz' on the first day back at work in the new year. :)

This is it, lads. The shops will never open again. We're doomed :(

Best advice would be to start looting them now! Today. Before the rest realise, tomorrow. Smash those doors and windows. Get in there and get the gear, before the whole country's at it and ye have to fight.

Life as we knew it is over.

Anyone give me a lift to Ballymahon? I wanna do the Gunnies place and stock up :P

The bank holiday for New Years day might be observed today but yesterday was the actual bank holiday.

    Citizens information explains it well.

Public holidays falling on a weekend
Where a public holiday falls on a weekend, you do not have any automatic legal entitlement to have the next working day off work. This will occur in 2016 when Christmas Day (25 December) and New Year's Day (1 January) will fall on a Sunday. This means that Tuesday 27 December 2016 and Monday 2 January 2017 are not public holidays. Your employer can require you to attend work on those days. When this happens you are entitled to one of the following (unless you are a part-time employee – see above):

A paid day off within a month of the public holiday
An additional day of annual leave
    An additional day's pay

    I understand that.

We are talking about it in the context of shops being open though. I.e. staff being off or not.

well why would you say I was wrong when it was only your misinterpretation that was?

private business can be open today, there are no restrictions, save for no financial transactions being completed today.

No, you don't seem to understand there's a difference between and bank and public holiday. It's evident for all to see. But instead of putting your hand up and admitting you're wrong, you're doubling down on ignorance. Poor form.

You should say which town and which shop. You're already on the internet, just look at the shop's page. A lot easier.

Anyone know if post offices would be open? I'm guessing not.

    Closed.

I Googled "Is the post office open today" and it told me. Great invention, that Google.

I got caught yesterday doing that. Checked a shops page which said it was open. Walked into town to see it closed
