Redundancy. Do you have to sign on immediately?

My friend is in this position and was asking us about it earlier. None of us knew the answer!

She was let go on 23rd December 2016. She has enough savings to see her through for about 6 months, and will also get statutory redundancy in due course.

She wants to travel and so on for a little while.

Are there any repercussions if she does not sign on immediately, and instead waits until her "down time" abroad is up?

She is not trying to diddle anything, in fact if anything she is saving the taxpayer!

Also, she raised another question. Could she claim Carers Benefit instead of the dole when the time comes?

She has a relative that needs it and would otherwise meet the criteria.

So many questions, and thank you if anyone has any ideas/information.

If she wants to travel, off with her! If the time comes where she has to apply for Jobseeker's or Carer's, once she can prove how she kept herself for the intervening period, she's covered.
