My missus is driving from the N4 on ramp of the m50 to the Arklow exit on the M11. Not very often I'm not driving and with my biggest frustration being the middle lane hoggers and undertakers, I'm gonna take note of how many can happen in one hour.

Incident 1 - silver BMW 11 plate merging from ballymount on ramp and straight to right hand lane

    Starting to rain.

Incident 2 - Blue 08 VW Toureg undertaking everyone between Ballymount and Tallaght

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 769 ✭✭✭dan185

    Incident 3
Dirty dark 10Wx Avensis sitting in the right hand lane - both other lanes clear. Varying between 90/100 and tapping the breaks

    What's wrong with that?

    Incident four

BMW drives up Sandyford exit lane where the m50 splits to 2 lanes, undertaking a line of cars. Merges in front of us with not much space to spare

    What's wrong with that?

Undertaking those in the middle lane whilst driving on the left?

And how was it possible for the toureg to undertake? Because the other moron drivers refuse to use the correct driving lane, unlike toureg guy. Fair play to him. I do the same.

So my missus is driving in the middle lane having over taken a car that had just exited the motorway. Couldn't merge back left because the Toureg was driving faster than she was.

Just passing slower vehicles like that is not undertaking. Undertaking would be leaving the middle to pass on the left and returning to the middle.

Not his fault if he just held his lane and speed.

The Toureg driver knows how to read the road. Good luck to him/her!

I salute the driver. People on here have a fascination that undertaking is worse than all other driving offences. It's not. Middle lane hogging is equally as bad.

I bet the undertaking felt GOOOOD! ;)

Not his fault if he just held his lane and speed.

It very much is by my understanding of the rules of the road.

It's not even a 'sure someone else is at fault' arguement about middle lane hoggers. How do those in the middle lane merge left if he's driving faster than them?

Incident 5 - Jesus about 4 cars merged straight to the right where the roads join just before Bray. We had to hit the brakes to not hit them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,825 ✭✭✭Neilw

I drive the M50 almost daily, I join and drive in the left lane with cruise control set too 100kph, if I pass people going slower in lane 2 and 3 so be it.

There's **** all on the road tonight, maybe 3 or 4 in front of us at that point. Who's to say they weren't all trying to merge left? (They weren't by the way - we had to over take them)

I'll tell you what felt even better. The blue lights coming on behind a similar clown between Blanch and Finglas on the M50 recently. Nearly pi**ed myself when I saw his face.

I used to commute in Dublin regularly along the Naas Road and M50 southbound in the mornings and if I'm in the left lane and doing 100km /h and I pass traffic going slower in lanes 2 and 3, that can hardly be illegal? Should I slow down and wave at them to go in front of me? Should I slow down indicate right and cross into lane 3 and overtake the car in lane 2 (if possible?)

Sadly you are put in that situation due to morons that drive in lane 2 at 50-80 leading to the 100 and no more morons driving in lane 3 and feeling it is their right to stay there.

There is no offence of passing on the nearside. You may overtake on the nearside if traffic in the outside lane is moving slower than your lane.

You might want to get that checked

(By the way, how did you see his face?, Were you in the middle lane looking across???? Hmmmm)

Sadly not the case. Its an offence to pass on the inside unless you are in bumper to bumper <5kmh traffic, the car to you right is turning immediately right or you are turning immediately left.

    What statute is that?

What s.i. says its ok to undertake at 100 kmh?

You know rightly the law does not list what is permitted. What statute prohibits passing traffic on the nearside if you are still within the speed limit?

Yup.Well aware. But i'm asking under what s.i. undertaking is allowed. When it contradicts the very basics of driving.

You do know you should move out a lane when cars are merging and also should adjust your speed to allow cars to merge.

No its not. If you maintain your speed and the car in outside Lane slows down, you can undertake

It courteous to do it but you're under no obligation to move or adjust your speed, its up to the merger to merge.

SUB 19.C States a vehicle may overtake on the left when vehicles in the traffic lane on the driver's right are moving more slowly than the overtaking vehicle. As I said.

Jaysus this escalated. Clear to see why there's such a poor level of motorway driving in this country. I do 60K km a year and my favourite part of driving is just after Newry where the number of southern reg cars reduces and people actually know how to use multi-lane roads.

So let's say I'm in lane 1 driving at 100kph and you're 500 metres behind me. There's a middle lane hogger in lane 2 so I merge behind him and then across to lane 3 to overtake. Once past, I merge left to lane 2 and by the time I'm trying to merge left again I can't get in because you're in lane 1 at the same speed.

I'm driving by the rules of the road and you're breaking them, but it's alright because the lad in the middle's also breaking them?
