External render

    Hi,
I have just built my new house and will be applying an external render in the next month.
I am still not sure which type of render to go with.
    1.natural sand cement
    2.monocouchel
    3.Acrylic

The monocouchel render is dearer but comes with a 25 year guarantee. But however this product has a bad name from previous in Ireland.

The acrylic render comes with a 10 year guarantee.

Still not sure which one to go with as neither the monocouchel or acrylic renders has been tested in Ireland for a long gone time.
Everyone I talk to gives me a different answer or opinion,
Your comments or advice would be appreciated

    What's the house construction?
    How exposed is it?

Would you leave the sand plaster as the finish or will you be painting?

    Hi Calahonda,

The idea is to use a plaster while minimising the maintenance over the life of the building.
This is why I am looking into coloured renders, if they do what they say, then I will be very happy, but not sure what ground I have to stand on if the product becomes defective in a few years.

Tried and tested sand&cemnt render. If done right, last centuries. Yes it needs painted every 5 years. The rest also needs painted every few years. They might claim they don't but trust me, I've seen with my own eyes they needing touched up.

How about a dry dash render?

Is that where you rub on sand/cement mix and then throw selected pebbles at it.

What about wet dash or roughcast. A mix of lime pebbles and cement.
It holds its colour well and keeps the wall dry.

    I agree

Which is exactly why I asked this of the op

I went with a silicone based render (Sto) on our renovation.

The advise I got at the time was that a silicone based product is better than an acrylic option in a damp climate like Irelands.

I know an uncle of mine has a white render from a company beginning with 'K' and he finds that after heavy rain he has a white dust left on his tarmac around the house.

Saying that - a sand and cement finish is hard to beat also, but wasn't an option for me.

My preference would be for a silcone based render also
