You'll have the option to get one straight from a scrap car or one that's reconditioned. The latter will obviously be more expensive but much less risky. I'd imagine you'd get a reconditioned one fitted for €800ish.
Sometimes the likes of naas gearbox centre do free fitting.

What is the problem with the gearbox? Is it just noisy? Or has it gone beyond that stage?

Beyond, I got someone to fix it last time but he said he could last or else it would completely go. Going to bring to garage Tues , just wanted to see how much to expect :(

What did they do the last time? Is it still driving? It's usually a bearing that goes in those boxes. If it's not replaced in time the bearing will eventually collapse and cause the gearbox to burst.

As it is a common problem id advise against a second hand gearbox unless your mechanic is going to replace the bearings in it. A reconditioned box would be the way to go otherwise.

You would be best going to a gearbox specialist rather than a main dealers.

Yeah, it's from the new range by Typota, they're aiming for a particular niche in the market: smartarses.

    Approx 3500 notes + VAT.

As JohnBoy said, get your own reconditioned for less than you'd pay for a second hand one.

How would you know if the bearing is on the way out? Is there an obvious noise from it?

    I

Yes a rough mettalic noise when you are driving the car. What is the symptoms of the gearbox problem on your car?

Get one in the scrapyard, it will be grand.

I thought I noticed a change in the noise the car makes recently, moreso when downshifting I think.

But it is not an alarming noise if you know what I mean.

Rough metallic noise is a what it sounds like alright. Typically, is the failure sudden or does the noise get worse before that?

It get worse overtime. Usually when driving and up to speed in 5th is when ud usually here it. Is the noise rough mettalic or just a whine?

You'd definitely know something was up when the bearings get noisy

No it won't. it will be a false economy if there is no proof of the bearing being replaced at some stage.

It might be grand. Or it might be on the way out too.
You won't know till you've paid someone to fit it.

The gearbox bearing went on our 1.6 Verso a few months ago. The local independent garage fitted a reconditioned 'box for €400.

€400 would be very cheap for a reconditioned box fitted I think.

A good mechanic will be able to replace the bearings in the old box if they are at fault.
