Seat Ibiza 1.2TSI

    Hi,

Considering pulling the trigger on a 2017 Seat Ibiza FR 1.2 TSI (110hp version). Finance works for me with the 0% PCP and scrappage gives me a way out of my current money pit of a car - a 3.0 TDI Quattro A4 that requires a lot of work to put through the NCT.

I know it's a significant change in style of cars, but my driving has also changed to a daily 20 mile drive to the train station instead of a 1000km per week on motorways.

Anyone any experience of this car. Reviews all seem positive. I haven't looked at competitors as the Seat is my preference styling wise, and the finance offer is hard to beat.

The styling of the Seat is a bit controversial imo, but if you like the looks, the 1.2 TSI is a very good engine. It shifts a Golf along very well and can return mid 40's on a run so I'd be hoping for better again in the smaller Ibiza.

Worth pointing out that the mk4 Ibiza has been out since 2008

There is an MQB platformed replacement coming in around 6 months.

Thanks, the dealer mentioned this too. In fairness, I know the whole scrappage part is really an end of line discount, however I need the psychological trickery of feeling like I'm getting something for my current car as it has cost me fair bit and is not saleable.

The quality of the Ibiza's cabin will be bit of a culture shock to you coming from an A4 too.

My missus has a 2016 1.0 sport. Little dinger of a car with good spec. I'd have preferred the 1.2 but its fine for her.

Yes, it will be big difference alright, however I'm quite use to it. My history is more mainstream than leather kitted premium brands. I've only had the A4 since July. Before that was a 10 year old Suzuki Ignis for 7 months, and before that was a platinum spec new Mazda 3. Rest of my history has been a Clio, a Fiesta, a Corsa an Accord, an Astra and a C5. Generally in the 8 to 10 year old age bracket with plenty of time at the mechanic. Bit of a rollercoaster.

I actually went with the intention of looking at Leons, but in reality the Ibiza has the space I need, and at least the higher powered 1.2 has the 6 speed gear box. Might run the numbers on a Cupra out of curiosity, but I think the smaller engine is probably the sensible option.

Can I ask if you opted for any options, or are there any you regret not having?

Armrest and cruise control would be a must if it was my own car. She doesn't seem to mind.

Her's is a Sport but I think they're standard on the FR. I'd also be going for the android auto/apple carplay.

There's a couple of boardsies with Cupras and I've driven them. They are ridiculous value for money for the performance. I'd have one in the morning if your budget stretched.

    I have a Leon 1.4 FR.

    Lovely car.

    Would recommend .

Is there anything to look out for with the 1.2TSI engine? My mam is looking at a 2012 Golf with that engine, only 15000km on the clock.

They can give problems with the timing chain.
Watch the clutch/flywheel, I rented a polo with the same engine and less mileage than that and it was hanging out of it.

I'm assuming with so little milage it was probably a run around to and from the shops. Will have a look and see what sort of service history is on it.

Not sure you're right about that timing chain. Reason is we have the 2015 110bhp Golf 1.2 TSI and it has a belt, confirmed recently after buying oil and filter parts, even the VW service desk assumed chain but confirmed belt.

The later EA211 family of engines have a belt but older ones are chain. Some needed to be changed at the first service.

Well decided to go ahead with the 5 door 1.2 in FR spec. No full link as I needed to buy ex stock (nct running out on current car). Will have it in the next 2 to 3 weeks.

Considered the Cupra, but the kids are occasionally in the car and I winced at the thought of them climbing into a 3 door car.

Thank you for all your responses.

Well wear, what colour did you go for?
Throw a picture into the "picture of my car" thread when you collect it.

The dealer told me I could have any colour as long as it was black or white. Went with white as it works better with the FR trim.

The other half has a Cupra since last summer. They are mighty fun but with kids you are definitely better off with the 5 door, access to the rear in the 3 door is not good!

I have the 1.2 TSI 110 in my Skoda Fabia, its a great little engine, don't be afraid to rev it hard :pac:

We have a Yeti with a 110bhp 1.2TSi. It's our second. Why they never fitted it to the VW up! Etc is beyond me. It would make a cracking little mini hot hatch. It's not fast outright but would be great on country roads

I had an Up! previously and agree it would be a fun little car with the 1.2!

I had one as a rental in Germany last June for two weeks. I was well impressed . Nippy, good boot, easy on fuel, good visability. It had sat nav which was very good, easy to use and intutive. Had it at around 150km/h on the slowest lane of an autoban (and i reckon i was the slowest one there!) quite solid on the road. I normally drive a 320d bmw. good luck with it.

Not quite the 1.2 TSI, but a GTI version of the UP has been confirmed for the end of the year with a 116bhp 1.0 TSI under on the bonnet :D

Same one that's in the Octavia I think. Should be fun

The newer up! has the option of a 90hp 1.0TSI. The 110 would be nice though!

Collected the car this morning and very happy with it, including the colour which works well in FR spec.

Not much distance done yet, but very happy with the engine choice. Not what you call powerful, but reasonably quick up to the speed limit. Hard to describe, but the engine seems to really fit the size of the car.

I've been driving diesels for about 4 or 5 years and had got used to the noise, whereas today I went to turn the key thinking the car wasn't running. The other big change will be remembering to change gears turning off at junctions - I had got quite used to automatics.

Oh, and almost forgot, I'll be considering cancelling my insurance policy and taking out a new one. It seems that the drop from 3.0 Tdi to a 1.2 exactly matched the upgrade to fully comp, so no refund on my 900 euro policy - age 36, full licence for 10 years and 6 years no claims bonus.

Ridiculous! Axa quoted me 550 fully comp on same engine, age 28 with 6 years no claims and full license 5 years

When you get a chance would you let us know what the car is like for motorway or extended spins (especially road noise)? I'm thinking of one for my 50 mile motorway commute!

Haven't had to venture on to a motorway yet. I'm always wary of commenting on road/wind noise as it is all relative to what you're used too.

110/115kmph is a high as I've been on overtaking. The 6th gear is good, about 2k rpm at 100kmph and I don't forsee any issues at the legal limit on motorways. Fuel economy might suffer a bit. Most of my driving is secondary N roads with poor surfaces, and whilst there is road noise (as with most cars this size), I don't find it intrusive. In fairness, I think my 2014 diesel Mazda 3 was noisier.

I've only did about 800kms over the 2 weeks I've had it, so still in the new car honeymoon period. If I have any additional observations over the next week or two, I'll let you know.

Have driven mine on motorway loads. Usually average about 40mpg on a decent stint.

Fuel economy definitely starts to suffer over 100km/h. I've had low 50s on long cruises on a mix of 80-100km/h roads.
