Battery dead and doesn't charge?

    Hi,

My car wasn't used for a few months or wasn't started as i was away, it started fine when i came back and i went for a spin and when i stopped it the battery seems to be dead, the battery won't recharge and is only about 12 months old so i'm thinking it's not the battery, there is a screeching which seems to be coming from the belts but they seem to fine, could the alternator be the problem?

The car is old it's a 00 mazda 323, how much would i be looking at to get a replacement alternator if that is the problem? would it be worth fixing? other than this the car runs fine,

Can't get it to a mechanic till next week so any ideas?

    Cheers

Screeching would be a slightly loose belt, visually you'll not notice anything amiss.

If it was the alternator not charging the battery the battery light would most likely be on. Alternator recon is probably less than €100, well worth doing if that's what's wrong.

    Battery quite possible is done.

Full discharge isn't good for them and the short drive probably finished it.

Have you a charger op you could hook it up to.
Was the car left linked or was battery disconnected.

No don't have a charger, the car was left linked almost for 3 months but started 1st go when i came back.
When i was driving back home it seemed the battery was dying as the wipers were slow and the lights were fading

I think it may be the alternator aswell as the belt seems tight,

Labour wise would this be a costly job from a mechanic to change the alternator?

Any ideas where i would try and pick up a recon one?

If it's to costly might end up scrapping it as it may not be worth it

Is the battery light on constantly?

It's usually the diode pack that goes in alternators, should be under €100 for an auto electrician to do. I see you are in Cork, Jerry Hurley would be worth contacting, he's not far from Barrack Street, Friar Street area.

Hmmm, sounds like a dodgy alternator to me, that'll be €90 please....

When i was driving it back home the battery light wasn't on, its hard to know now if it will stay on as it's totally flat and wont start

Ill try jumping it tomorrow and see
