How does a normal person get a licence?[insurance for permit holder?]

I'm asking here out of sheer frustration with the rules that seem to make it impossible to actually get a license.

I have my learner's permit, I've 6 out of 12 EDT lessons done. I need to practice driving more than the 12 hours of EDT if I've any hope of passing the test.

So contacted my dad's insurer to see if I could be added to his policy as a second driver, they say no, I'd have to have my own policy and that'd cost €2,700. I don't have that kind money, they said it'd be cheaper if I got my full license, but of course how do I do that when getting my license requires me to practice?

I only want to use my dad's car to practice driving around the park on weekends for the next 2 months in the run up to my test, he'd come with me for said practice.

Is the expectation that I drive my dad's car uninsured for a short time for the practice? Why don't the rules accommodate this? Can anyone offer advice?

Look up Aviva driving school, they offer 13 driving lessons plus you get 6 months free accompanied driver cover on your parents or guardians but I think your parents have to have an existing policy with them.

What did they say when your Dad enquired about adding you on?

I'm on my Aunt's insurance and it was herself that arranged it with her insurance company.

You can't have 2 policies for 2 different drivers on the one car surely?

I think they are confused about the issue were some kid can buy a car, pretend it's their parent's and have them on it to get a cheaper rate. But that's clearly not what you are doing.

Get your Dad to ring them with your driver number. It's his policy. He's their customer.

Get your dad to ring up, I'd be very surprised if they wouldn't let him add you as a named driver.
