Can I claim illness benefit after leaving job?

I have just left my permanent job due to stress. I was on sick leave for two months in March- April and received illness benefit then. I returned to work in April but resigned in November and will be unemployed from January 1st
I realise that I can apply for jobseekers benefit but would not receive any benefit for 6 weeks as I left my position voluntarily.
Should I attend my GP and apply for illness benefit in the interim? Unsure what to do?

If you were working and/or getting a PRSI credit for 39 weeks in 2015 ( 13 of the weeks must have been worked then, yes absolutely apply for Illness Benefit first thing Tuesday morning. You will get the application from your GP only
