Got a diesel jeep, going fine...but was looking to do oil filter, and noticed on very bottom of engine casing 3 missing bolts..
Not good i would think..however nothing leaking out of area..where would i get replacement bolts?? Wreckers or main dealer? Any ideas..checked all other bolts in engine etc and all there..cheers

Go into the main dealer and ask for sump bolts for your car. It won't be dear and they'll get the right ones.

Not bolts that drop out of oil sump, rather they go across and join both parts of lower engine casing by the looks

Those bolts are connecting the gearbox to the engine.

    Engine to bellhousing bolts

Are you sure they're missing? I suspect that they should come from the other side than that shown in the pic (the head of the bold should be resting against a flat surface) and that the hole has just been threaded all the way through....

There is quite a span there with no bolts - so I think they are missing .
Would have to be fairly short as they would have to be fitted from the front (engine) side.
They could have been left out following a job or loosened and fell out later due to vibration/not being tightened etc .

If they are supposed to be there the bolt is meant to go through from the engine side. I don't think I've ever seen a bolt hole threaded on the entry side.

If I was a betting man I'd say they're for bolting on accessories like a bash plate or similar.

    What jeep is it?

From those pictures it looks like something is dripping between the engine and bellhousing. Crank seal gone maybe?

They are bell housing bolts youre looking for.

Thanks everyone, on closer inspection, at some time some gasket seal was put there...whats the bellhousing do? Is it gearbox to engine related?
    Oh..its a santa fe 2 litre diesel.
    Thanks
