When applying for a course with ETB it says you will need to be approved by your local DSP.
Does this mean I would need to go in for a meeting?

The last 2 courses I done through the ETB I had to be referred by the DSP.

There was no questions asked by my case officer however as I had experience previously in employment relating to the courses I wanted.

Now however I am going back asking them to approve me for 3rd level for something completely different.

OK, so you might need to speak with your case officer this time then?

I was thinking of applying for a first aid course. Its a short course. I've always been interested in.

The way it was before I just approached FAS, but since it all changed it now needs to be done through the DSP.

I reckon they'll approve that for you no problem.

They offered that course to me before and i didn't even ask for it.

I declined on the basis I had no need for it at the time (2012) and still haven't to this day.

I'm just interested in it. I wouldn't have to pay the fee. That's the thing I suppose I don't have any real need for it.

I know to do it with St John's Ambulance they charge 150e for it.

A friend of mine is an EMT in his spare time, can try and find out is it cheaper just out of curiosity.

You'll be waiting until after January 2nd at this stage to get hold of a case officer.

It doesn't start until January 24th. It says jobseekers allowance may quality for something called fee waiver scheme or something like that.
I'd say case officer would expect me to have good reason for doing though. Maybe just interested wouldn't be enough :). I'm scared I wouldn't be approved & they'll refer me to Turas Nua or something :)

So long as it doesn't interfere with looking for work or taking up work if offered it and it makes you more employable they should have no problems with it.

Just say you are looking at a career in that area and you might be ok.

What it means is if you are on Jobseekers you get the course for free.

I heard Turas Nua is a nightmare and useless.

People are no better for it. what county are you in OP?

Are the welfare officers chasing you down for work/courses?

Every county is different i'm hearing.

Hope your right CrazyTeacher :). I think I will need to say I'm interested in that area & sort of have a back up plan.
I'm in Mayo. I've heard the same about Turas Nua its madness!

Obviously I am looking for work. I just haven't seen a case worker for nearly 2 years now & just have a feeling he/she might have other plans for me if I call in. I'll think it over for another while thanks :)

Do you get any extra pay for the course?

You get your normal amount plus a travel allowance and €4 meal allowance (on full time courses)
